I cannot stand anything that compresses my feet. I have gone to wearing no socks at all, and prefer sandals over something that encloses my feet.

Since I wear socks that are loose to reduce pain, I would think that compression socks would make the pain worse. Maybe it's different for others.

The only thing I can think for a use for compression type socks would be swelling. Some swelling leads to pain, by compressing nerves.
But to me at least compression socks are the last thing I would ever try. I can't stand things on my feet anymore. I only wear socks if I absolutely have to! Since my feet don't sweat, odor is less than you'd expect. I just change the insoles of my shoes when necessary.

Actually my PT gave me some different strengths of compression tubing she had cut and suggested I try compression. After a couple of weeks of experimenting I am thinking I will go ahead and get "fitted" for some socks. I'd say they affected the pain by half a point or so. I'll report back in a few months with more impressions.

Varicose veins may respond to specific antioxidant intake.
I had a huge reduction in mine when I used Yerba Mate tea for 6 months (for my gall bladder). The varicose vein issue was an added bonus. Yerba Mate is very popular in S.America, and is consumed more than coffee there. If you are interested, I'd suggest using only the GREEN unsmoked variety, which is safer and has no free radicals from the smoking. Ecoteas is the one I used. I had to buy it online, but there others now. Other things that may work are grapeseed extract, green tea, or red krill oil: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krill_oil The red color comes from a powerful antioxidant: astaxanthin Which you can buy separately (not found commonly in stores so try online). I've only been on this for 2 mons (a trial to replace my fish oil) and already my skin has improved quite a bit (not as dry). Over the years there have been products with horse chestnut extract in them too... made for veins. But they have fallen by the wayside. I think the grapeseed extract is good for PNers for other reasons too. So you might try 300mg a day and/or add in other antioxidants as well. http://altmedicine.about.com/od/heal...cose_veins.htm
