Hi All,
I've had meralgia paresthetica for about 10 years but didn't know that's what it was until I had a neurologist examine me 8 years ago. Still thinking he missed something I have had 3 EMG/nerve conduction tests since then and all have turned out negative. They don't offer help just tell me not to worry. It was normally bothersome during sleep. My left leg goes numb while on myback and stomach and I wake up from the burning sensation. I also get numbness forming while standing. Sitting relieves it. Lately, it's been really bad and I might be aggravating it by running more often and doing hip flexor stretches. But I want to get rid of this thing because I want to enjoy standing and walking without having to sit every 5 minutes. Does anyone have experience with this condition? Can you offer any suggestions on what I can do on my own (i.e. stretches, self massage, etc.) to cure this? I'm going to see my chiro this week to see if he can help. Up to this point I've just taken it as a fact of life, but now its really starting to affect me and I want to get rid of it forever. Thanks for the help, Joe |

Hi, Joey.... We have a MP forum here. You should look at it.
Many things will cause this, and it is different for each person. I had this as a result of a C-section surgery. It progressed to really painful stabbing attacks, that took my breath away. When Lidoderm patches came out I used them and it sort of put the nerve to sleep. Now I only get twinges with over extension of my leg, or going into the steam room, or soaking in a hot tub. Search Lidoderm on the MP forum for more information and links to medical sites. MP can be misdiagnosed with trochanteric bursitis. Too tight clothing, a wallet in the back pocket, legs of different lengths, or abdominal surgery can trigger it. I have also heard that a blood clot in the thigh can trigger it, or a harvest of bone marrow from the pelvis bones. This a link to get you started: http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000401/2109.html
