It is my understanding that we all got PN because our immune system is weak.
I have decided to get some vitamins that are primarly to boost the system. I will still take my other vits to keep all systems strong. Has anyone done a study on immune vits? George |

Also, I think antioxidant supplementation for neuro-degenerative disorders like this is crucial to halt and reverse disease progression. Polyphenol antioxidants like pomegranate, grape seed, green tea and resveratrol can help. Using Alpha Lipoic Acid if possible and Benfotiamine can be beneficial to many.

Vitamin D, A, C, E are really important for immune health.
B vitamins especially B12 is deficient in many nerve conditions. Magnesium is important for many energy processes in the body. CQ10 also boost cellular energy. People usually get bloodwork done for the vitamins/minerals and then go from there.

--we get peripheral neuropathy (and a lot of other things) from the fact that our immune system is too strong, in a sense; autoimmunity occurs when our systems cannot distinguish foe from bodily tissue and attack the latter.

There are certain nutrients that stimulate immunity. Those are also discouraged for MS patients.
High dose zinc is a major one (RDA level is okay). So is Astragalus herb. There are some studies showing high dose zinc helps with Herpes infections. This link has a list of other things that stimulate immunity: http://www.raysahelian.com/immune.html This topic is important for some diabetics who tend to get infections easily and heal slowly. Those patients with PN who have elevated ANA and other markers should be prudent with nutrients. Some things we need to stay healthy, but high doses of the same may just fuel the immune system. There was an interesting thing just published that B6 has been shown to reduce risk of cancer of the lung and colon! Also this thread response by a visiting doctor is recent about folic acid and those with non-conversion to active forms in the body due to genetic failures: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/post663808-20.html Being too LOW in certain things is not good either. Essential fatty acids. B12, folate, B6 low D (but very high D stimulates immunity) moderate Vit C -- these all help maintain and repair myelin mitochondrial damage responds to acetyl carnitine, CoQ-10, r-lipoic acid Every day we see new studies on things... some say have no effect and some say, are showing promise in some area. So I'd make sure you have had some antibody studies done if this concerns you. You can still take supplements, but just take what YOU need.

I agree with Mrs D have you had complete bloodwork done? If you can find the why behind your PN it can help the overall symptoms plus stop it from getting worse.
