Hi Doug:

If you are on Social Security Disability, you could have a million dollars in the bank and they can't touch it.

If you are on SSI, now that's a bit different. I believe they let you have $2000 in the bank.

So SSI is completely different than Social Security Disability.

Some people are on both, SSI and SSD. My son (because he has aspergers disorder) is on SSI and he also gets another $20 a month from Social Security Disability because both of us (his parents) are on Social Security Disability.

So he can't have more than $2000 in the bank at any one time. Doesn't matter in his case, he'll never have that much in the bank.

If you are talking about special trusts being set up, I think you are referring to SSI. If this is so, they do have their rules and regulations.

Maybe some people on this board knows something about SSI and can help you.

Take care,
Melody

Doug:

I once went to a NAMI meeting and the whole meeting was about what happens if a person is on SSI and SSD and the parents want to leave them money when they pass on? What can they do?

Well, there was this lawyer who specialized in trust funds and such. He answered questions for two whole hours and gave out his card at the end of the meeting. All the parents made appointments with this guy.

They all wanted to leave their adult children their inheritences but they wanted to make sure the kids wouldn't lose anything because they were on social security.

You need to find a specific lawyer that specializes in inheritences and trust funds for people on social security.

Here's a link to a site to ask your questions.

Best of luck,
Melody
