Default Important News for everyone suffering from Small Fiber and / or Diabetic Neuropathy

Hello Everyone!

I found the following link to "Metanx" in the Neurology section of "Medical News Today". I am extremely intrigued by this medication and wanted to see if anyone is familiar with it (Mrs. D?).

Here is the link to the homepage for "Metanx":

http://www.metanx.com/index.php

... and here is the link to the "Medical News Online" article:

http://www.news-medical.net/news/201...-patients.aspx

I should also mention that I am already taking 5000 mcg of Methyl B-12 orally on an empty stomach (but no B-6 or Folic Acid other than what is already in my multiple Vitamin). That said, would this be of benefit for me (or others) already taking the Methyl B-12?

Default I'm sure Mrs. D will reply--

--with her take on this, as might others, but I'll give mine, which is that while this medication will likely not hurt anybody, it's only worth it if one has good insurance that covers its cost almost in full, as all of the ingredients of metanx are basically available over the counter. (The methylfolate is tough to get, but one can use mehtylators to process other sources of folate, and the amount in a Metanx dose--3mg--might be pushing thins a bit, even for diabetics. Then, too, methylcobalamin B12 should be taken by itself, on an empty stomach, for maximum absorption--methylcobalamin is the largest molecule the body normally processes, and it's real easy to interfere with its absorption--which this pill obviously doesn't allow.)

My advice would be to go to iherb.com, swansonvitamins.com, vitacost.com, etc., and check out the sales on these individual vitamin components regularly, and purchase supplies that way (and take the methylcobalamin by itself when you first get up in the morning, at least an hour before you throw anything else after it).

This vitamin mixture as been discussed here in detail.

Here is a good thread on it recently, and near the end a doctor came on with new information and his take on it.

This thread is about whether the generic is equivalent, but during the discussion other things are brought up. What I feel is excessive is the high dose of methylfolate...so read the thread and see:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ghlight=Metanx

If you search here on PN using the search function at the top right of the index page, you will find much more.

Basically this product is unique in that it supplies 3 ACTIVATED forms of the 3 B's needed to prevent high homocysteine and help neuropathies. But it can only help if you are deficient in these nutrients.

... many thanks for your information.

Mrs. D, you are truly a wonderful human being (as are many others on this website). The depth of both your knowledge and compassion are simply amazing!

Sounds interesting I did quick scout , as I am in the uk , but only see it being offered as cream .

Do you think theres any other way to get hold of these 3B's seperately or in some other form or product /s ?

I believe a typo is the reason for the cream you found.

Mentax is the cream

Metanx is the vitamin product.

And if you already take the methyl B12, I don't think you need
the Metanx at this time.

But do get tested for Vit D3 levels. This can help also if you are low.

Default Taking Metanx for 2 months now

[They say i have diabetic PN but I'm sure its Idiopathic PN. Anyway I have been taking Metanx for 2 months now and I see no change. The brochure says it can take up to 4 months to see a difference. I hope so. The metanx can be compared to taking 19-1mg folic acid tablets, 2-B12-1mg tablet and 2-B6 25mg tablets. Only good thing is Ins. covers it I'm hoping it will work.

Hi leford18,

There must be a reason "they're" saying that. I think I'd at least keep an open mind and investigate that possibility further, as there could be more than just PN to be concerned about.

Make sure you take it on an empty stomach.

I don't see how you get 19 folic acid 1mg when Metanx only has 3mg metafolin in it. Granted metafolin is activated but I don't see it equal to 19 of the other. The P5P is 35mg.
http://www.metanx.com/QuickFacts

How many of these are you taking a day?

If you are not deficient to begin with in any of these, there won't be much effect IMO.

There are many other things to try for diabetic neuropathy.
lipoic acid
acetyl carnitine
benfotiamine
Vit D3

are examples. All have studies showing improvement with them.
