I have sensory-motor peripheral neuropathy. Over the past number of months my upper stomach has been bothering me in the center and a little to the right just below my rib cage. The pain radiates into my back. The doctor says it may be a peptic ulcer by the symtoms, he did a ultrasound of my gawl bladder (I don't know if I spelled that correctly) and said it looks good.
I don't take imflammatory medicine that often, usually 2 to 3 times a week for my arthritis. I now have to stop taking it because it can aggrevaite my problem. Has anyone else experienced problems with their gastric track because of neuropathy. I have also noticed that the numbness and tingling in my feet and legs do not feel as bad when I go barefooted. I did not go have the LP that the neurologist ordered he wants to check for autoimmune problems were the immune system attacks the nerves. kinda scary and it is subject to my deductable. I don't know if there is any other tests that can be preformed to check if it is a autoimmune problem damaging my nerves |

It is a lumbar puncture to check my spinal fluid for autoimmune problems. I am not sure what autoimmune problems are seen in spinal fluid. Tests I have had done to this point is blood work, b12, folate, protien, protien elecritrophm, sedimation rate, hemoglobin glycosylated, and methylmal acid. I know he was testing for diabtic, thyroid problems, vitamin defiencies, arthritis ect. All labs came back normal. I had a nerve conductions study done, that showed damage involving the myelin and axons. Affecting the peroneal, sural, and tibal nerve in both legs. It showed slow conduction velocity, and prolonged distal latencies, also all my F-waves were prolonged with the right peroneal absent. The emg the needle part of the test was normal. My CMAP and my SNAP were normal exept for the peroneal nerve. He thinks it is a systemic problem. |

they are looking for autoimmune markers or abnormal proteins in your spinal fluid. also bacterial and infectious diseases, lyme disease and meningitis. also the pressure of your spinal fluid may indicate brain tumors . the color or consistency are also indicators of diseases.

hi there
Autoimmune problems can be dx through blood tests which are going to be a lot cheaper than an LP. I have lupus (autoimmune), and sensorimotor neuropathy, and have regular blood tests to monitor my disease. Personally I would skip the LP and just go for blood tests. hth Raglet |

when i had a lumbar puncture, i had already had a few years of testing done, blood tests, mri's, emb/ncs, blood flow testing of feet, bone density etc and the lumbar puncture was pretty much the last stop for me for testing.

Have you had a Skin Punch Biopsy?
(not a Sural nerve biopsy).

I have large fiber Neuropathy, small fiber is diagnosised by skin biopsy. I don't have a lot of pain, just when I get cramps in my feet. I get an occasional burning sensation in my thigh but it usually lasts a couple of miniutes then it goes away. It's more mild numbness and weakness, and some odd sensations but not really painful just an uncomfortable feeling. Sometimes my legs don't feel like they are working properly when I am walking, mainly do to my left knee feeling weak. I don't know if it is affecting my circulation. Some morning when I wake up my hands are swollen and feel stiff, my feet are also stiff but do not appear to be swollen like my hands.
I have also notice a very small bump that is firm, which I believe is on a tendon in the top of my left hand because it moves from near my wrist to the center of my hand when I flex my fingers. Thank you |
