Default Heel Pain

I've had a pain in my left heel for about a month, now and cannot tell when it began or what could have brought it on.
It has persisted as if I had stepped on a tack, a very long tack- deep into my heel when I step down.
It feels as if there's a bone spur irritating deep down.

I've tried to locate the position when not standing, but no amount of pressure with my hand or fingers duplicates it. It has to be when I put my whole weight on it.

I have gained weight since stopping cigarettes 6 mos ago (30lbs), and my knees and ankles are protesting a bit- so I'm taking glucosamine & chondroitin and am starting to regulate my portions and my foods to try to lose some weight, but this heel pain is becoming so painful, I feel as if sometimes I just want to give up and stay home in a recliner 24/7.
It was a real challenge 2 wks ago on a 980 foot cruise ship when all the food was in the stern and all the events were in the bow. Walking back and forth several times every day put a big hurt on- but I didn't let it ruin my vacation, just slow it down, a bit.

The shore excursions were also on a slower pace than my wife likes. She wants to take all of it in, at a rapid pace. I've had trouble keeping up with her for many moons. Taking her to malls are insane for me. Vacations are whirlwind buying trips. This one was with a cripple. She even suggested me buying a cane (as if that would have quickened the pace!?). I couldn't find one that was right for my size & weight. I felt that I had to apologize to her for my incapacitation.

She finally parked me on a beach at the British Colonial Hilton in Nassau, and went on a shopping trip for 3 1/2 hours. I just soaked up the sun & surf (as well as a few Bahamian drinks) and took a lot of photos and shot some video.

I have an appt with my podiatrist this coming Mon. and will run this by her in the hope she can come up with not only a reason, but a solution.

This is a real bummer. I can't tell if it is a physical problem, a neurological one, or.....whatever !
