Hi,
I've got NP - probably due to liver disease, but the docs aren't sure that is the cause. The pain in my hands and feet is noticeably worse when lying down, especially the first 1/2 hour. Sitting or standing it is more an irritant than anything else, but lying down it can go up to moaning and groaning level, and can make getting to sleep difficult. I was wondering if that was typical, and also if anyone could explain what the reason is - that it is worse when prone. Thank you. |

Welcome to NeuroTalk:
Many people say that their PN is worse lying down. This may be due to whatever is wrong with you. Or it may be that sensory feelings are more noticeable when pressure is off the feet and you no longer are using your fingers. There are priorities in the nervous system, and position is important so those nerves and your brain are "busy" when you are not lying down. Within the sensory modes, cold will take priority over heat. This is why menthol gels and other topicals can help burning pain. Can you tell us more about yourself? What your medical history is etc?

I have neuropathic pain in my torso, neck and jaw, and there's a lot more pain when I lie down to go to sleep at night. My neurologist told me the brain goes through a kind of neurological inventory before going to sleep, and this process heightens nerve pain. Don't know if it's true but that's what she said.
I don't notice this spike of pain when I lie down during the day for a nap. |
