Default For anyone taking neurontin

If you have been given neurontin, or another anti-seizure drug for neuropathy, just be aware that they can interfere with vitamin B absorption. I was on neurontin for a long time and ended up with alot of problems because I was never told that. The drug can actually over time exacerbate the PN you had to begin with because it depletes your B. Now I research carefully every drug I take.

Default Very true.

It's part of the reason I advise anybody on anti-seizure meds, many of which, like Neurontin, are dealt with by the kidneys rather than being metabolized by the liver, to take vitamin B supplements, including seperate B-12, and NOT to take them around the time of the med doses.

The flushing action of the meds on the kidneys tends to make it harder for b-vitmains to stay in the body long enough to be absorbed, so it is best to take them in goodly amounts. I take approximately 50mg a day of most of the B's, 800mg folic acid, and an additional sublingual 2000mcg/day of methylcobalamin B12, which is particularly hard to absorb when there is any medication interference.

Lightbulb I could not find documentation for this interaction.

I did find that some websites, lump ALL anticonvulsants together when
discussing nutrients. Gabapentin may work the same way as those others.

for example this one:
http://www.evitamins.com/healthnotes...tentID=1390003

Notice how generalized and non-specific the data are.

Until I see studies specifically for gabapentin, I would be cautious interpreting
these websites. (no studies come up on PubMed for gabapentin).

Neither of the references I use, show any data for gabapentin specifically.
