Default nonsemtrical PN

Hi all, I have been seeing a neurologist for awhile now and have had a lot of testing done. My problem started with foot pain and has progressed to into numbness, tingling, pain. It started with my left foot and about four months later in my right. I think it has moved into my left hand now. It is much worse in my left verified by the doctor. He has run out of stuff to test me for so he wants me to see an Emory doctor to see if I need a nerve biopsy. I am very reluctant to have this done. I need advice or suggestions. This has been going on for about 14 months and has become very debilitating and I am getting desperate to figure this thing out. I have already tried b-12 megadosing and every test came back normal.

Hi Nonsem:
I went to two neurologists at respected centers who each had me do nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG). These are usually the first tests a neuro will run to see if abnormalities are detected--as well as blood tests to check for conditions that can cause PN. Your neurologist will probably do these tests, to begin to figure out your diagnosis.

In my case, my NCS and EMGs are normal--so the first two neurologists didn't know what to do, called it idiopathic, and sent me on my way.
Now I am a patient at a specialty neurological institute and have gone through many more tests (spinal MRI, lumbar puncture, and SSEPs), and now I have a diagnosis.

So, the bottom line is that it is great you are being referred to a specialist at Emory. Hopefully, if they don't find abnormalities in the first set of tests,s/he will keep testing till they can get a diagnosis and figure out a treatment that works for you. Take care!

Thanks Imagine: Just found out today that my appt. with emory doc is in 6 months......At the rate of progression I hope I can still walk by then. My neuro doc has tested me for everything he can (unless he missed something). The only thing left is amyloidosis and vasculitis. They may not find anything. Having a hard time copeing with all of this. I am trying to stay strong but it gets to me sometimes......
