I now need to find some combination of leafy greens that I can fall in love with. I was raised up believing that greens were just rabbit food and I had no clue that so many essential nutrients were missed the way I ate. I guess for me it's "baby steps". Good Luck, Ken in Texas.
Ken, Animal protein causes inflammation so I hope that is not the protein you are talking about. I don't have much of a problem making lettuce taste good using some homemade dressings (for example using garlic, tahini, avocados, salsa, not all at once), but my problem with that is the effort required both for the lettuce and dressing. Also you can put leafy greens like kale, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, in soups such as bean soup, where they don't have a lot of flavor. But getting in the greens is also a challenge for me, and we are not alone.

Yes, I've been on one for a few years now. While it's been beneficial in losing/maintaining my weight better than any other diet I've tried, and is effectual in controlling chronic pain in general (the reason I began it), I can't say it's had as much (if any) effect on my PN symptoms as the supplements I'm taking.

Doc
Can you tell me which supplements helped with your chronic pain, and what time of chronic pain you have. thank you

My doctor wanted me to stop sugar and bad carbs so I did. It made my recovery much faster since the nerves are free of the problems sugar brings. Then the supplements can actually heal much better.

The book is full of information about mitochondria also. Information about Nerve Growth Factor hormones in the brain (Neuroprotection) is good too. It isn't just about not having carbs, but having a diet rich in micronutritents and antioxidents. Nerves have to have foods and supplements to get rid of oxidation, toxins. They need to be free of sugar and the wrong carbs so inflammation is gone and then supplements, exercise, sleep and foods can help them heal.

I would hate to know what would have happened if I didn't have Integrative MD's that knew how to help my Autonomic Neuropathy and Peripheral Neuropathy, also my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It would have been a different outcome. I would be unable to sit up. I have Dysautonmia and the blood was not able to be pumped up to my head and heart.

I was in bed, then a w.chair. (LONG awful story) Now I can walk for a long time, not dizzy. I could not even turn my HEAD for a long time. I am healing. My family, hubby, parents, are all so happy. I am so happy not to have to worry my parents anymore I was so very ill.

Sallysblooms, thank you for mentioning Dr. Wahl's book, it sounds very interesting. I e-mailed a link to the book at amazon to my local neuropathy group since some of them have autoimmune conditions. I am rather interested in exploring the topic of "paleo diets" since some people have apparently have improved health from them, yet there is plenty of evidence to show that we are more healthy without animal products. Now if a person were to switch from a standard American diet to one with some animal products plus a low level of processed carbs, plus wide variety of greens, I would expect improved health due to lots of veggies.

Dr. Wahls does her own version of the Paleo Diet, which is a Ketogenic diet, but it is very nutrient dense unlike the typical ketogenic diets that are in the literature (for example, Hopkins keto diet to treat kids with seizure disorders). She has easier levels of that diet to follow depending on the motivation of the patient.

I'm a firm believer that different people do better on different diets and different macronutrient ratios; experimentation of diet along with a little bit of directed lab testing is a great way to go. However, if we do look at the majority of the studies that show people were healthier without animal products (RCTs and epidemiology), several variables were manipulated - exercise, stress management, limitation of processed foods and sugars, and some were given certain drugs as well. It is very unclear if the restriction of animal products is what caused the benefit.

Thaks to Sally for pointing me in the right direction!

I tried following wahls protocol, but I'm a vegetarian so I basically did no grains/carbs/gluten (I mean none, whatsoever!), no milk/dairy, no meat, no caffeine.

Tried it for 3 months, didn't make a difference in my symptoms.
