Hi
I regret we cannot allow a complete copy/paste of an article that has copyright as this one does, because that can result in us being in violation of another site's copyright regulations, with legal implications

Thanks for the article. It is encouraging that something like this
made it into mainstream laymen's media, like ABC.

Nav1.7 has been researched for quite a while now, starting
back in the mid '90's.

Here is more detail on it...from wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nav1.7

I would like to think that because this was published, it might mean something will be in the pipeline soon. But that still translates into YEARS.

Here is a podcast that further discusses EM and sodium channels by Dr. Stephen Waxman, Director of Yale University’s Center of Neuroscience. It is a great podcast that explains things well, is encouraging by how much we know and the likelihood therapies will be available in the near future.

That's totally cool that there's a drug that's already gone through the approval process that may help some folks with erythromelalgia (EM). And, doing some web searches, it does look like Carbamazepine (the drug mentioned in the ABC News article) is also used for other kinds of nerve pain.

The interview with Waxman starts around 14:30 in the podcast that dac122 posted. He hopes that a 1.7 sodium channel blocker as a treatment for EM will be introduced in three to five years. Interesting he should say so, since he is (or was) working closely with a subsidiary of Pfizer, Neusentis (formerly called Icagen). (According to an article in Science News, http://www.sciencenews.org/view/feat...e/Hurt_Blocker.)

The Science News article mentions two other companies working on Nav 1.7 blockers: Convergence Pharmaceuticals, in the UK, in phase II testing for lumbosacral radiculopathy and trigeminal neuralgia; and Xenon Pharmaceuticals, in Vancouver, Canada, which has reported some success on treating EM.

Here is an expanded article about the new drug Nav1.7 blocker ointment form being tested in phase II trials now.

http://www.xenon-pharma.com/2011/05/...tic-neuralgia/

Looks promising, but it will be a few years yet before we see it approved and for sale here in US.

This link was posted on RSD forum today.

Why do you say it will be a few years, Mrs. D? Couldn't it be sooner? Brue

This is a link that explains drug phase testing:

This Nav1.7 blocker is beginning phase II.

3 to 5 yrs perhaps if it makes it as safe and effective for our FDA approval process.
