Has anyone here any experience with OxyContinus?
My neurologist has suggested this is place of Tramadol as he says this gives a more continuous pain relief rather than Tramadol which is short acting. This would be taken along side Lyrica. He is suggesting starting at 10 mg threes times a day and gradually increasing this up to 40 mg three times a day. Lupin |

I have taken oxycontin in the past for vascular headaches. It is a 12 hour continuous release. For example, if you take 40 mg you get 3.3 mg per hour for 12 hours. Generally, it is not prescribed for 8 hours cause if you take one after 8 hours, you still have four hours of 3.3 mg per hour left plus whatever you have just taken. I took 40 mg every 12 hours. If I had pain that would "breakthru" then I would take a fast acting 5 mg oxyIR (I think IR means immediate release). These are goon drugs for pain but be careful because since they act for 12 hours once they are in your system they are there for 12 hours. Watch your breathing and be sure itthe mediis not slowing it down. Also, don't tell anyone but your closest friends you are on oxycontin because the street value is 1 dollar per milligram. In other words, one 40 mg onycontin goes for $40 on the streets. It is enough incentive for someone to break in your house. When you throw the empty bottle away, rip the label off and tear it up so no one rummaging thru your garbage looking to steal your identity doesn't find a goldmine if he (she) rrealizes you have a cash cow (oxycontin) in your house. BEEEE CAREFUL. Nancy Stephens

Is released in two bursts... not continously. Patches do release drug continuously but oral drugs do not. Typically there are "coatings" or pellets with different coatings (some release in the stomach and then again when pH changes in the intestine).
This is why one should never CHEW them or break them (which abusers often do)...as the drug will be released all at once and may be an overdose. If one is up for the pharmacology of this product..more can be seen at www.rxlist.com

During my last trip to the Urgent Care Center, the doctor there told me if he were prescribing my pain meds, he would NOT prescribe the Darvocet N-100 that I try to get by with. He said he would prescribe Oxycontin because it is less toxic.
I repeated this to my Internist, who promptly nixed that idea, due to what he felt were addictive properties...Other than my tiny faux pas with the "1" Methadone, I have always been careful to take a minimal amount of pain medication, even when pain level has been miserable. However, I really would like to keep my liver here... ![]() Cathie |

Cathy - I suspect your Internist nixed the idea more out of his/her concern with the DEA. This is exactly why so much pain goes undertreated! I will never understand how a physician can allow his/her patient to suffer while s/he rides home in his/her fine car to his/her million $$$ home. And they all believe in "first, do no harm". Give me a break.
Prescribe a medication properly, keep detailed records, and there is very little to fear from the DEA. And it might help if they got a little education on addiction. The real problem is - they don't want to be bothered.
