--is caused by an ischemic attack, but that the autoimmune mechanisms that underlie scleroderma damage small blood vessels and connective tissue, which then cannot support proper nerve function. If the nerves are starved of nutrition and oxygen long enough, and/or if metabolic toxins build up in them and cannot be removed circulatorily, neuropathy may well result.
Scleroderma is a particularly nasty situation as regards neuropathy, as the skin/connective tissue tightening itself may bring on neuropathy just through compressive forces on nerve alone, in addition to the mechanisms described above. But, unfortunately, none of us are excused from the possibility of being "co-morbid". |

I know that Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease (body attacking itself). It also depends if it is localized or systemic, etc. None are good. My good friend had Scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus. She lived longer than expected because she had more than Scleroderma. That was the first I had ever heard of Scleroderma. She died an awful death.
We are now seeing Scleroderma in our family. It is absolutely awful! It has progressed very fast and it certainly doesn't look good. Much pain medication and other drugs. Being treated by doctors and neurologists (Mayo Clinic) who know Scleroderma and they too are amazed how fast this has progressed for the person. Again it is awful and unreal. It would be nice if it went into remission but it seems doubtful. So again, I know first hand about Scleroderma. It sucks I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! |
