Hello everyone,
Quick question, is it possible for peripheral neuropathy symptoms to show up a year after a head injury? |

--but I'm not sure then it would necessarily be related to the head injury.
Remember, though, that neural symptoms from damage to the brain or spinal cord can exactly mimic those of damage to the peripheral nerves. If you are experiencing symptoms in the limbs, it could be the result of "peripheral" damage there, or it could be the result of "central" damage. If you had a head injury, was any imaging done? |

My PN started well OVER a year before I knew what was going on, I simply ignored warning signs in my stupidity or lack knowledge. Now having learned, I realized I had warnings a year or more leading up to it.
I have no idea if a head injury could/would do the same. |

I had a bad concussion 1/02/2013, slipped on a driveway my feet flew out in front of me and smacked the back of my head. I never lost consciousness and no physical damage just the annoying "we can't find anything wrong physically". I was diagnosed with PCS from what my neurologist called a TBI since my chronic headaches and memory issues are still with me.
On December 3rd, I fell and hit my hip on the outside corner of the metal frame of my bed. Lots of pain and when I finally stood up and put weight on my right leg I fell again and landed on my right arm. I can't remember how long I laid there with my weight on my arm,I think I may have passed out from the pain. I do remember landing on the floor the second time and it was excruciatingly painful.Eventually I got in touch with family, they got me to the hospital, nothing broken just bruised hip, right hand and right arm. A few days later,my right foot and lower right leg swelled up a great deal,no discoloration,no pain. Then swelling around the outside of my right eye, same thing,no pain or change in color. All swelling went down so I figured no big deal. The stupid thing was I never called my doctor or went to the ER but I did take pictures of my swollen foot and leg. A few days later my right hand started to tingle, then my left, then a day later I get the burning pain.I call my primary nurse practitioner and she sends me to a hand specialist/surgeon and he diagnosis me with CRPS. I went to see my neurologist and he ordered a sonogram for the swelling which was negative,no blood clots and ordered an MRI with contrast of my C spine which showed a small area of spinal fluid inside my spinal chord at the height of my C-7 vertebrae but it's very small. He sent me to a neuro surgeon who wants to see yet another MRI of my C-spine,a closed MRI. Neither my neurologist nor the neurosurgeon think I have CRPS. When I explained my symptoms to the surgeon he suggested a ganglion nerve block which I thought was one of the possible treatments for CRPS. The reason I asked if peripheral neuropathy symptoms could take a year to show up was because my neurologist thinks that my burning hands are due to my initial concussion from over a year ago but I think it has everything to due from landing on my arm in a off manner and probably staying in that position for several hours. I also have similar, but not as intense feelings in both feet. |
