We'll I walk a lot but that hurts my feet, but I just put up with it. Swimming doesn't seem too bad, but running really hurts my feet so stopped that, racket sports are bad they hurt my hands and I have painful wrists and arms. It's a bit of a nightmare to be honest

Hello baba, I push a walker and as the title suggests, I go to Wal-Mart, McDonalds and in the house I use a stationary bike that loosens the knees and ankles. I hear a lot about exercising to tolerance and my Dr, said the best thing for my legs is to use them. Gritting the teeth may be a part of many peoples plan. Good Luck, Ken in Texas

baba222, Exercise helping with pain is well-documented. That is one thing they suggested I do when I visited Mayo in '07.
I walk on a treadmill, doesn't seem to bother my feet. This will increase blood and lymph flow in the legs and feet, which is always good. I also do push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, lift dumbbells (from Academy), stretch a large rubber band (like used for Pilates I think), and swim sometimes. Beware that swimming puts very little stress on your bones so does not keep them strong. Some things that make exercise more tolerable for me are watching youtube videos while I exercise (usually about health), eating a yogurt (usually almond) when I am done, and remembering that the exercise is improving my health. I have never been offered advice on excersise, I just do what I can, I can't take weight through my wrist for press ups it is just too painful, my diagnosis is what my neuro describes as a working diagnosis which I assume means it's not 100% certain. I wish I could get some advice re excersise but no one seems to want to commit an opinion, my gp just says do what you can.

I can't do too much anymore but I can walk. I try to walk everyday. I have to say my legs hurt when I'm done. I believe if you don't use it you lose it so I put up with the pain.
My neuro told me walking will probably not bring back the strength in my legs. I hope it stops me from losing more and getting weaker. |

yes, easy exercise makes a big difference for me.
I have little feet and hand exercises I do each day. Do a google images for feet and hand exercises. Also lookup therapy putty and gaming exercises for the hand (they are the same exercises for hand pn). I also do 15 minutes of balance exercises regularly since I was falling and bought a foam balance mat (works much better than pillows) ... also mix in some yoga balance poses. again ... google images balance exercises. I did a hunt around for special mineral pools which I try to go to. I happen to have a salt water pool near me which I go and do exercises in. I got a waterproof sony walkman made for swimming and I listen to inspirational talks. Also my local Rheumatism association gives lessons in the pool called "aqua jogging". I also got a home stationary bicycle which makes a big difference and therabands. My partner and I now do easy cycling rather than long walking. I do them near my computer and watch youtube videos on medical questions I have or I listen to podcasts (see neuropathydr.com). Also lookup my post on my "bean bucket". This seems to keep the tingling down. If I combine my exercise with listening to or watching stuff I'm into then I don't mind to do it. I was sick in bed for a week with no movement and my PN really flared, so I could see that activity makes a big difference. I don't walk too much though or the electric jabs start in. Also, don't do any big impact stuff. Natalie |

For me, swimming is the best, walking is not much of a option as it causes to much pain... But now with winter coming, (well So Cal) I will have to find a local indoor pool!

I have not ordered them yet but if I can suggest some DVD's they are geared for seniors altho I don't consider myself one altho I am 62 however my body is way past being a senior with the deterioration. They need another label for that! Ha ha
Any way it is called Eldergym I think most are done seated looks like He also has a whole bunch of exercises you can download for free There are balance DVD and strength etc. I should have done this yrs ago I bought a massage table to do stretches on. It is a nice padded sturdy one. (It is hard on the back and body getting up off the floor and laying on the floor.) I enjoy using it. I have one cat that will rub on the back of me when I lie there. She gives nice back rubs. |
