I have hereditary axonal sensory motor neuropathy- Charcot Marie type 2. If your sister has symptoms that may be what you are dealing with. It progresses slowly, although you may face a big setback sometimes. A lot of your symptoms sound familiar- the muscles in the feet and lower legs weaken first, then the thighs have to work harder so they ache too. It can become very painful.
I started with clumsiness and inability to run as a child to increasing numbness in my early 30's and tired legs/ leg pain. Now at 52 my legs are numb to above the knee, I have pain to hip level, and walk with one or two hiking poles. My hands cramp or claw up if I overuse them and are much weaker. I am on pain medication which enables me to still function at home and enjoy being out, but I am definitely limited and need to rest quite often.
Please tell us more about yourself and your symptoms. How old are you?

Cramping toes suggests you may need some magnesium to make up for what your muscles are missing.

A magnesium lotion rubbed into your lower leg and ankle and top of the foot may relax them and give you relief.

This works very well for most PNers or anyone with muscle or circulation problems.

http://www.amazon.com/Morton-Epsom-L.../dp/B008X365AU

Available at WalMart, Walgreen's and online at Amazon.
Use about a quarter's diameter on intact skin only, once a day to start. You don't need much as it is absorbed quickly.

Magnesium relaxes cramping sore muscles.
It improves blood flow the the area applied.
And it blocks the pain receptors called NMDA receptors to
reduce pain and discomfort.

This lotion is very inexpensive and wonderful. You should try it ASAP to see if it works for you so you can avoid other treatments that may have substantial side effects.

You can have clawed toes with CMT.

Default Welcome!

It really depends on the cause. I started out with mild sensory neuropathy (slowed conduction on sural nerve) with my first EMG 10 yrs. ago. It has progressed, but still don't have answers as to the cause. I have symptoms in my hands, but not showing up on EMG like my feet/legs do.

Do you have axonal neuropathy showing in all 4 limbs on EMG/NCS?
