Very interesting article - I see it was written in 2012 and relates to mostly animal studies. Even in just 3 years studies on the influence of the gut on brain function have progressed.

The influence of gut bacteria on the brain is also indicated in Parkinson's disease.

Also related to gut bacteria function is a current human study in Australia about probiotics and the possible use to help control weight.
