Do you take an ACE inhibitor drug for blood pressure?

If so you might ask your doctor to switch you. ACE drugs increase bradykinin in the body and some people (even over time) get too much of this building up in the tissues. (ACE drugs are Vasotec, Lisinopril,

Benazepril (AKA Lotensin)

Captopril (AKA Capoten)

Enalapril (AKA Vasotec / Renitec)

Fosinopril (AKA Monopril)

Lisinopril (AKA Lisodur / Lopril / Novatec / Prinivil / Zestril)

Perindopril (AKA Coversy / Aceon)

Bradykinin is similar to histamine, it will cause fluid to build up in the tissues, and that includes the skin. Antihistamines don't work on it however. So if you take an ACE drug, it could be a culprit... if not, then you have to keep looking.

Try putting a cold pack on the area that itches...that often will stop the feelings without overstimulating the skin.

I have been here about two years and know just enough to get by. After a while you can click on a persons name and talk to them only. The search function needs 4 charachters at least to do a search. When you log in if you click the remember me box, you can go outside and smoke a cigarette and still be logged in when you come bacl. That really helps if you are long-winded like I am.haha.Most folks start by telling their symptoms and whether they are a diabetic or post chemotherapy, etc. We will ask you if you know your b-12 number. If you read the "stickies" these are the posts that give the skinny about certain subjects,ie,B-12. So don't give up, you can't hurt anything I don't think. All that medical jargon will make sense in a little while, we are just folks that are walking in front of you down the same road. Good Luck, Ken in Texas.

I get this itch from using opioid painkillers, which btw work very well for my neuropathy but I have to use less than optimal amounts due to itching. The only thing that has helped so far is colloidal oatmeal. Instead of soaking in a bath I make a slurry of it in a small jar and paint it on my body. So far it's helped a lot and it's the only thing that has.

Thanks, Pinky. I agree because shingles can come from having a latent chicken pox virus both of which are herpes zoster, I believe. In the info I've found, all these things are similar to the idiopathic itch I have. But nothing is mentioned specifically about a treatment or the length of time one may expect to taper off or stop.

Where we disagree is that it's gone on - I'm recounting - at least 2 months and the 3 blisters I've had haven't broken. They just flatten back down to a small pinkish area I can barely see. nothing is spreading. The same ones go through cycles of a slight itch to the maddening itch you can see - then back to nothing - no dry skin, no flaking, no scab etc. - just plain skin.

Maybe like pn, there is no cure - just coping.

I think I agree with you somewhat. Shingles comes from chicken pox - both of which are herpes zoster. Info I found linked all this to this itch, but none of it mentioned a time span or effective treatment relief. Over 2 months now and the same places keep appearing with terrible itching - then totally disappearing until maybe a week later. 0ver and over. Never all at the same time but constantly a few.

When you get this, how long does it last and what helps you?

Yup, I get quite itchy too. A few times I've had soars that have opened and bled or gotten infected because of it. It's the worst on my feet though. I've heard there are some types of amyloidosis that can show up with an itch, I think it was on your upper back, but I'm not sure if that would apply for all over your body. I know it's relatively common, or certainly not uncommon. The itches on my feet just wouldn't go away, as though they were internal.

Jon, it only happened one time and best I remember it lasted approximately 3 weeks. I think mine was related to a mango allergy but never knew for sure. The itch I sometimes get now is what I understand to be a more typical one on my hands/feet.
