Finally after 14 years. According to the new study, the correlation between World Trade Center first responders and neuropathy is 4x the correlation of diabetics and neuropathy.

Apparently there are now more deaths among first responders from toxicity than occurred in the initial disaster. As noted, there are high rates of a variety of serious neurological disorders as well as cancer and respiratory illnesses. There was a serious attempt to cut federal funding for medical expenses, but a new bill passed in December. Estimated cost is $3.5 billion for 10 years.

I worry about residents: NYC had a rent subsidy program in place soon after 9/11....my young son felt so lucky to be able to move there...his first apartment. I really didn't think about the repercussions at the time.....he was a block away during the whole cleanup.

Sylvie M. your son should register here even if he isnt currently having any medical problems. This will help to preserve his rights in the event that he does develop a condition that is world trade center related in the future.

Glenntaj, citing this study and a previous study showing significant nerve damage to rats exposed to World Trade Center dust, as well as my own personnal exposure and medical history, on January 5th I petititioned the Center for Disease Control National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, to have peripheral neuropathy added as a recognized condition resulting from exposure to World Trade Center Dust. This would apply for anyone thus exposed. They have 90 days to rule on the petition. In talking to the researchers, I was informed that in the case of severe peripheral neuropathy, there is 15 times the correlation between World Trade Center first responders and the general population not exposed. The petition is kind of a David vs. Goliath scenario, but we shall see. You have inspired me more than you know.

Echoes, update here or send a pm if there is any means to help, even if it is just a letter to our Senators on the issue. This is insane to me that they would not address the obvious toxic effects of that level of destruction.

A question, have you looked into the Pentagon side of things, whether victims there have been cared for on a different level or does the National Security side of things lead to no documents/redacted useless ones?

there was a press conference back in January about this and all sorts of people jumped in front of the cameras never to be seen or heard from again. I started yesterday to contact again those who devise the questionnaires that are used for World Trade Center Medical Monitoring to press to have the question added do you have numbness, tingling or nerve pain. ive been trying to do this for 13 years now as you probably know. Meanwhile i was talking to the doctors from Winthrop who did the studies I cited, and they are going to team up with NYU to test a large number of responders and survivors with the basic neurological exams but also with emg's to provide what should be incontrovertible proof. New York University is a powerhouse as you know and should get their attention in a way that Winthrop probably could not.

right now its a case of delay, deny, hope you die in the meantime, which those in the military who were exposed to agent orange or suffer from gulf war syndrome are all too familiar with.

Thanks, Jon. you would think that it would be a no brainer. hundreds of neurotoxins and carcinogens have been identified in the world trade center dust, not to mention the many thousands of people who suffered from respiratory infections which could have lead to autoimmune reactions causing peripheral nerve attacks. Is it really such a stretch to consider that there would be a much higher rate of peripheral neuropathy in that population? the fight goes on.
