Included in my polyneuropathy package is asthma. This is my 4th nasty occurrence of it since the neuropathy went full blown. I had noticed for years shortness of breath during some types of exercise and in high humidity, but it crept up gradually, as did the nerve pain and other stuff, so I never went to get my breathing listened to.
My primary dr. gave me a ventolin pump and at first I though it didn't work because I would start coughing in about 15 minutes of using it. Apparently that means it is working because its opening me up enough to get something out.
I hate to take anything but the labored breathing is making my muscle spasms and dizziness worse and exhausting me.
I also got a symbicort inhaler and tried it for the first time today since the other one wasn't doing as much as I thought it should and I am shaking and hot.
I am new to asthma and know nothing about how to manage this. Anyone here knowledgeable about this topic?

ventolin is a rescue inhaler, to be used while you are actually having asthma symptoms or an attack, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing etc.

symbicort is a corticosteroid that reduces irritation and swelling of the airways thereby opening them up. It is meant to prevent symptoms, not to treat an attack, and has to be taken regularly

i have asthma that was caused by the same thing that caused my peripheral neuropathy, toxic exposures. My asthma also developed at the same time as my peripheral neuropathy. Same here. What ever happened to me caused both. It seems that when I am triggered by a virus or allergen, I have asthma now. So I have been like this for a week now. I am definitely afraid of the simbicort now though because of how shaky it made me.

Do you know what toxic exposures caused your illness?

Symbacort has two drugs in it. One is a long acting bronchodilator like the Ventolin (albuterol) and the other is a
steroid.

It is to be used daily, as directed only...with no doses increased or added to it. It has to be used daily to PREVENT asthma, and is not for rescue symptoms like the Ventolin.

The albuterol does have adrenergic (adrenaline) actions and if overused or used WITH the Symbicort, can give stimulant side effects (tremors and/or racing heart).

If you do not use the inhalers correctly you can deposit the drugs on the inside of your throat, and have systemic reactions and side effects. The goal is to inhale the mist so it gets to the lungs.

Some people deposit drug on the throat when putting the inhaler in the mouth... for them...a spacer is handy to allow for only inhaling the mist generated by the inhaler. You can discuss this with your pharmacist.
Some spacers are expensive.. others not. You can even make one yourself.

It's true on the MSM too, I've been taking it for years for OA pain but know it addresses so much more. I take powder in water at least 3 times per day....about 15 grams total. We need sulphur.

try to learn what your triggers are and avoid them as much as you are able. I just caught a virus a few weeks ago and im still going through an extended asthma reaction right now.

My toxic exposures were from the World Trade Center in 2001. i was there the day of and for four months after.
