Default Question - SFPN and clumsiness

Hello all,

My question has to do with my clumsiness and actually hurting myself real good.

I missed the last stair, which I have done before but this time I landed on my toes and roles my foot over the top and then the ankle. No breaks but possible, multiple, ligament tears and ruptures.

Yes, painful and the first time I felt sick because the pain was over the top. It's been 3 weeks now. Been in a bit for 2. Swelling is better but I have multiple sites still causing large amounts of pain. Pain pills don't work. Waiting for MRI.

Doc days to me, do you think you SFPN is making the pain more than it should be? I have no idea... Has anyone else been through similar scenario? Was your pain more than normal, which I don't know what normal is?

Anyway, even if you have not had this situation, thanks for reading!!

HB

those are pretty painful injuries even for those without PN.
When my PN first developed every pain or even touch was deeply exaggerated and very painful.
i now have deep numbness in my feet and legs and when i have injured them, i didnt realize the extent for a day or two until the injured area turned purple.

I often get those pains as well but they have been controlled better with meds. I have been fortunate not to get the deep nerve issues. I'm sure I would be frustrated not knowing you hurt yourself until you got a bruise of some sort.

Thank you

Oh, I sure understand this post well.

My balance is suffering. I drop stuff everyday. I keep a picker/reacher with me on the sofa for that. (I work on my art from the downstairs sofa.)

About 2 months ago I stumbled going up the stairs. and banged myself up painfully. It took a month for the pain to quiet down. I have been using an aluminum hiking pole all this year around the house, and it helps me alot. I think I would be in worse shape from my trip up the stairs had I not had it.
I also focus on every step when using the stairs. Gone are the days for me of automatically getting around.

Ankle sprains are very painful and longlasting IMO. I hope you sought some help and advice immobilizing your injury properly.

I can relate so much to all the clumsiness and issues with losing grip and amplified pain.
I do think when we have any kind of neuropathy and have an injury, the pain is definitely amplified.

I also have fallen on stairs and over door steps and almost daily, because of the neuropathy in my right arm and hand, I drop mugs and glasses and silverware and I have to be very careful about slicing veggies with sharp knives because I have done a lot of damage in the kitchen as well.

HB,
That is quite an injury you sustained. I don't know if you are on any meds for neuropathy but if you are, maybe you can increase them a bit to help soften the neuropathy pain. I also find, and it may be just me, but if I eat certain foods, especially various spices like black pepper, cayenne or whole mustard seed, my neuropathy really amplifies.,

My best,
D.

I hope things feel better for you soon. I understand your pain - I've had a couple nasty ankle sprains when in my 20's. Took months to heal up - only to start hurting again every morning once I was in my 40's
Now in my 50's, its just the morning ritual of hobbling around every morning when I get out of bed - and add in a bit of neuropathic pain on top of it for good measure.

Can't wait to see what the 60's and beyond will bring for me

I used up a bottle of Aspercreme with Lidocaine, on that stairway fall. I hit both shins just below both knees on the steps, and at first worried that I broke them. I put my two ice packs on them ASAP, (hubby helped) and went straight to bed with them.

In the morning there were no bruises, but I couldn't touch either with my fingers ---Owieeee! So it was the Aspercreme/Lidocaine for a week for them. Took a full month to get back to baseline. I am very lucky to have that good bone density.

I also whacked my right shoulder, which is not in great shape either, but that only lasted 2 or 3 days. I had the walking pole in my right hand and it saved my head and full weight hitting the stair ends. I use it all the time now going up and down. I never put much weight on it, but use it for balance and focus.
It did get bent, and hubby straightened it, but it won't telescope anymore. I used to only use it outside and in public, but I now use it about 50% indoors. Many poles have poor quality rubber tips, so I replaced them with Leks tips which are much better. Got them at Moosejaw, and once at Ebay.

One has to be ultra careful with neuropathy and falls!

I have poles as well for walking but don't have to use around the house, only when our and about. I too have fallen you the stairs but not hurt myself till I missed the last step going down.

I saw my doc, who got me a boot. No breaks OK the x-ray. Seeing an ortho next week. Hoping to find out what the deal is. Will keep you all informed.
