Oh, thanks for clearing that up for me. When you had blood tests, did your iron level indicate that it was low?? Is that why you take prenatal vitamins?

I mean, I remember those vitamins. THEY ARE BIG!!!!

lol

Default Many people who have low iron or folic acid levels--

--are told to take prenatal vitamins, as these are formulated with somewhat higher amounts of iron, folic acid, and (often) B-vitamins than regular day-to-day multis. But, for people who are fighting certain conditions, even this may not be enough. Preimenopausal women, in particular, are quite prone to iron deficiency, as they lose enourmous amounts of iron from the typically heavy periods they experience each month--althogh anyone with long, heavy periods, especially over 40, should have their thyroid function checked as well (especially if they have other hypothyroid symtpoms--unexplained weight gain, excessive fatigue, cold body temperature, dry and brittle skin/hair . . .)--this can be related to excessive iron loss.

Iron levels should be monitord regularly--and not just the iron level; ferretin stores and transferrin saturation levels are generally more sensitive and longer-term indicators.

If one needs more iron than in a prenatal, there are other good iron supplements out there, such as Slow Fe (same people who make Slow-Mag). Iron should be taken with Vitmain C containing foods, its absorption is aided by them.

Now, as to the other concerns--I know Imentioned in a previous post how once one is diabetic many doctors ascribe all neurological symptoms to that, and it may not necessarily be the case; the symptoms may have something to do with your fluctuating B6 levels. And, while I'm not an expert on this, the condition of pyoluria came to mind--this is a controversial entity, but it seems to be related to the known neuropathy causing condition of porphyria . . .you can read about this here:

(Cara, AKA jccglutenfree on these boards, of Gluten File fame, suspects her daughter has this condition, and has accumulated some info about it, if you want to PM her.)

One thing that surprised me, was that after having a lot of B12 replacement, the skin under my fingernails became a sort or pink... no longer blue.

And I also stopped having the feeling when I stood up that I would faint.

All my life, I mean ALL, the doctors told me that I was iron deficient, and they would prescribe iron supplements. (iron deficiency anemia)

But since I've had so much B12, that problem seems to have gone away... so now I wonder if it ever was iron, per se. I wonder if all my life I've had low B12, but was only severely affected after a few decades of pretty intense stress...

I mean, they do say that our bodies come with a good store of B12.

The P-5-P B6 I know works is the specially coated one made by Solgar. MrsD taught us about it years ago. I'm sure though that their are other reliable brands now.

Yes, over the counter.

Karen,

Since most people who malabsorb B12 do so because of insufficient stomach acid, and since really good iron absorption also depends on sufficient acid, they frequently go together.

With that type of malabsorption, problems could take many years or even decades to come on because of very slowly approaching B12 deficiency, especially slow because of processed foods fortified with B12 and the popularity of multivitamins and B complex. With that level of malabsorption, those could actually prevent deficiency.

But, for those who are not familiar with this information, that type of malabsorption progresses in some to severe malabsorption due to loss of intrinsic factor. When that is present, B12 from foods or even most vitamin supplements will not help at all. A much larger dose is necessary.

Default Hi There

I told you they would show up and every time the wonderfull
people do i learn something new ahhh the benifits.
I still wondering if you were pre-diabectic or borderline what ever
they call it now,for a while. Your weigh loss is great. I'm
a Diabectic 2 i've lost 90 lbs. and the lighter on the feet, the easier.
I was a nurse for 25 yrs. and i have heard Drs. embarrass so many
paients, how dumb because it does keep people from speaking up.
Please always write anything you need to ask and take it to the
Dr. and hand it to him-her,ask them to write down the answers,so
you don't forget when you get home. Better yet take a friend or
husband. I just got out of a teaching hospital and keep a record
book like LJ and it kept from having to answer the same things over
and over. ha one less pain. Boy aren't those Grandchildren great,
my little 2 month old is in Or. and i'm in Mo. but all the pictures
sure perk me up. And now 2 more are on there way,so i'm really
excited.
,
Glen thanks for the posts,i would never of thought of that. And
Rose is always on the nose as welll as Mrs. d. Oh i never had this
problem before my always thick hair it thining out,it comes out
on my brush,no new meds. helppp anybody. Could it be the
Sjogren's Syndorme,or the big infection in my leg or perhaps the
Pig Skin they have on my leg??? Oink Oink And hi D glad to seeyour post.
Sorry for walking on you post J. my hands get tired..GET ALL RECORDS
they belong to you and feel better. Sue

Yes, I could see that as an explanation. (that low stomach acid was a problem keeping me from getting enough B12 or iron from food.)

But if that were it... then why would B12 shots get rid of my low iron?

The shots wouldn't change my stomach acid level, would they?

(I have actually wondered sometimes whether in fact they do... whether once our bodies have a lot more B12 they are again able to do some things they had previously lost the ability to do.)

Hi Sue...

Your mention of your hair falling out reminded me of how mine was doing that when I lived in the hydrogen sulfide (I expect that many different toxins could cause that effect) and when I had tetanus, and now when I have the infection around my old dental implants... now it happens if I'm not taking enough vitamin C to keep the infection in check.

For me, when I have an infection I tend to get reddish lines under my fingernails... and sometimes a pattern that looks a little like the aurora borealis...

You might look at the pictures I have (they are old because of not having electricity and now having to do the appeal)

http://www.health-boundaries-bite.co...ail-Lines.html

If it is an infection that's affecting your hair, it may be stopped by vitamin C... I've been taking 3grams about 4 times a day... I don't think that's quite enough, but it's quite a lot without causing diarrhea. I'm really a big person, though... 6 feet tall and HEAVY.
