After reading many posts, I believe I may have some early stages of PN. I have constant discomfort in my toes on both feet. The discomfort seems to flare in two situations -- in the morning after sleeping and after extensive walking. I have no other health conditions. And, i have been taking B12 supplements for several months and I see no change.
Thoughts? Does anybody have a similar situation? If so, what did you do to treat it? What worked and what didn't work? Thanks. |

Hi jdknelle
Welcome to NeuroTalk; I hope that you will find the community as knowledgeable and supportive as I have . I can't directly answer your questions; my PN is in my hands and is a legacy of when I abused alcohol. I am sure that you will get helpful responses from other members. All the best.

Welcome and there is a lot of good info here. I developed nerve burning from lifelong arthritis and then nerve damage from hip replacement. I use Vicks salve both when I go to sleep and also during the day with socks of course. Vicks is an analgesic and calms my burning. I've been taking B12 lozenges for years and wouldn't stop it, many are low in the B's. I take ibuprofen for pain every 6 hrs wish I didn't but I do. I take a lot of supplements and very few drugs. Hope you find some relief from the info here.

I suggest you see a neurologist and get tested. Try putting something that is cold on your leg below the knee and keep placing lower and lower if you feel less cold as you get to your foot you probably have neuropathy! I have tried every drug on the market as well as treatments and some seem to give temporary relief but It fades quickly! Good luck, feel your pain! |

Yes, I also have similar issues. It seems to come on differently and progress differently for everyone. Mine came on pretty suddenly almost 4 years ago during a period of extreme stress in my life, then stabilized and got somewhat better (but is still there).
There are so many things that can cause this, and many times (like in my case), you never find out what the root cause is. Still, you should see a neurologist to have a full workup done, to see if they can find a cause that may be treatable. (Diabetes and alcoholism are two common and treatable causes.) For me, I take a low dose of Gabapentin, and try to maintain a healthy overall lifestyle. (Diet, exercise, stress management, and certain supplements may help.) I also wear shoes that are wider then normal and have a large toe box to minimize contact in the sensitive areas. I also really like shoes with a thick memory foam insole (a lot of Sketcher brand shoes have them). I also find that wearing thick, soft socks, and turning them inside out so the smoother side is in helps. My favorite are the thick white athletic socks from Costco. (Sometimes it is necessary to give up fashion in favor of comfort.) Best of luck finding some relief. |
