My numbness is weird, it's not like a scar or injury where the surface of the skin is numb, it's deep down in there. On the ball and big toe of my feet it feels like the area where the bones are is numb...everything else I can feel.

Does it feel like a sock is bunched up under the feet when you have shoes or boots on? Mine does and that was the first 'sign' 4 years ago.
