Hi I was wondering has anyone ever used Benfotiamine, it is the fat soluble version of vitamin B1. I see that thiamine is recommended on page 2 of the 'Important links/stickies' thread and it seems Benfotiamine is better than standard thiamine.
From the bits I have looked up on google about this supplement it seems to be useful for diabetic neuropathy but im not sure if that is the only type of neuropathy it is useful for. Also im not sure if it is safe to take at the doses that are stated on a lot of sites (300mg twice a day). Any information would be helpful. Thanks |

Hi Mark, people with alcoholic Neuropathy are normally very low on B1 too, I believe Benfotiamine is pretty potent form of B1, i haven't used it myself though, i can't see the need for it, i do take 200mg daily Thiamine daily, which really should be plenty anyway.
I think B1 is a very safe supplement, the only time i don't take my thiamine is when i am on antibiotics, B1 should not be taken at the same time as the antibiotic tetracycline because it interferes with the absorption and effectiveness of the medication. Anyone else know much (or anything at all) about this vitamin? Seems like to me the relationship is the same as Methyl b12 to the cyano b12.. (benfotiamine to thiamine b1). Does anyone have any success/relief in using this vitamin at all, in combination or separate is fine.

Benfotiamine is more expensive. My thought is that if thiamine does not work for you, then you go up to the more expensive benfortiamine.
You have to use enough of thiamine however, and best in divided doses throughout the day. 200mg-300mg total. It is so easy and inexpensive, and really works, I think all PNers should try it.
