Gee, terminating a conversation and waiting 3 weeks to call someone back who is suicidal is not being very supportive. Maybe he would be different if you were actually living there, but I don't know. I guess this could be because he is very old though...

Let me ask you this. If you go on to California, is there anyone there who can help you if you need help? And, are you in good enough condition to be able to take care of yourself, in the event you need to get to the doctor or get somewhere for treatment on your own?
