My handwriting has become atrocious, i cant even read it after a period of time. Ive made lists for the store that i cant make out some of the items when im shopping...ha...... and this after 13 years of catholic school penmanship. Recently i had to sign one of those computer signature boxes and i couldnt hold the pen to even sign it, it was so slim.

Sorry it took so long to answer. My hands have Rheumatoid Arthritis in them. But I've found that the writing is more affected by the tightening of the muscles than the joints. I have to remind myself to relax. I seem to just get tighter and tighter. Stopping and taking a deep breath now and then relaxes my hands. They burn and they hurt but they work o.k. except for missing keys every now and then. I twitch. I developed a tremor when I developed the neuropathy. Don't know how many of you have this.

Yeppers! That just comes on in phases...as in when you have to sign one of those machine things! Suddenly...spasms and handwriting comes out of my fingers like that of one 30 years my senior! I did that yesterday? And asked the checker if I could well, um 'do it over'? She'd said: It's cleared, just finish...no problem...IF I had to say it was my signature in a court of law, well, I'd have to really hesitate! Very strange this world we live in!
I THINK I'll just blame it all on the meds! Better excuse than most I guess. Hugs to all! 's - j |

Bob is allowed to sign my things but like Hey Joe after all that Catholiclic
school, now his writing is worst then mine,I am allowed to sign for him.. But those boxes, but J.is right most of the counter help, they just want to go home ,not look at our ugly writing...But it still hurts kinda... Billye no problem, guess it's time to check back to the Rhumy, but I bet it's a little of everythink...But I do many of the things you do it does help. oh gezzz,I wish nobody pain are more problems, but this is what NeuroTalk is all about, you can ask this kind of questions and find others with same problems, you don't feel so bad when you hear yes i have that or feel that, Thanks everyone, thanks again. |

Well, I am not Catholic and I did not go to Catholic school, but I do have beautiful handwriting for all of 2 minutes, I can sign my name beautifully, if you leave me alone, with a paper on a stable surface. Those little computer gadgets that Hey Joe is talking about, forget it, I can't handle those little pens either, let alone hang on to the little computer and write--they always say, "Now remind me Deb, what's your last name again?"
Last night, my daughter was on the computer and I needed to write a letter to my parents for the Christmas card, I tried 3 times, thinking I could maybe write just one letter! Nope! I could not get through one sentence with handwriting that pleased me. So, I patiently waited for her to get bored with what I was watching on tv and leave for the bedroom. So, I was typing a letter to my parents at 11 pm last night so I could get the card out today. I swear I can drive mail to Michigan from New York faster than the US Postal Service gets it there!

Deb We urge all doctors to take time to listen to your patients.. don't "isolate" symptoms but look at the whole spectrum. If a patient tells you s/he feels as if s/he's falling apart and "nothing seems to be working properly", chances are s/he's right! |

I was actually going to post today about this - and heres a thread.... I dont have Sjorgrnens but due to my sensory pn - have no feeling in hands or arms on skin - but still have motor fuction.... I've noticed lately that my fingers are doing little dances on their own.... at first I ignorged it cause just one finger - now both hands - I cannot hold my fingures open without them twiching up and down or side to side... I dont have trouble writing because if I tense them agasint something they stop - and its not like a tremor but twitches.... (when the muscles are relaxed).... I've had PN for 7 years and this is new.... my legs shake very badly when I'm tired at night - could this be a manifestation of overuse in hands??? any ideas? Seeing neuro early January - I'll show to him them - but appreciate any feedback.
Thanks |

Your hands can get bad from just the PN, or you can develop myopathy and arthropathy so combined it makes for bad penmanship or typing. I usually have to edit my posts so much they time out. I did go to a Catholic school...the first one was rather regressive, but I learned to write....the second one was very progressive and I learned speed reading, and advanced science and things I still use in life. Hands are soooo importants. We think a lot about our legs and feet....well, I am far more concerned right now with losing my hand function.
I have had my thumbs move totally into this weird position, without my feeling it or having any control over it. They pull over my palm--into the center or towards my little finger. Weird. After about 5 minutes, it will release...but there is no moving it voluntarily. My handwriting and typing depend on the day, but in general, because I don't have good propriocepton, have about 50% of my strength, have arthritis as well, it just doesn't look too good anymore. Even my signature can vary so much I am waiting to get a check returned or something....eh just think of a doc's signature... It is no 'John Hancock'. |

My hands seem to be just like yours. The side to side twitching started with just one finger on my left hand, spread to two on my left hand and now seems to be most fingers on both hands. I can't determine which days are the worse. Days I sit with hands in my lap are no different from days I make jewelry all day or type a lot. I'll be interested in what your doctors say.
