Another adventure...

I won the "discussion" over the grassfed beef. I made my trip to the place closest to me today. It was fortunately a road I know well. I realized how really bad my eyes are today. This ranch was hidden off the main road down a tree lined lane. It was well kept. A huge log cabin home with two log cabin out buildings. A young woman with skin to-die-for came out of the house. She was dressed in a long skirt, boots and a short fitted jacket. Very unmadeup. Long hair in a chignon at the base of her neck. I just couldn't get over her skin.

Anyway, I got beef, free range chicken and eggs. Local honey and expeller-pressed coconut oil to cook with. I've bought enough to feed us for a month. Just have to find quality vegetables to go with it. I won't be driving for at least two weeks after the surgery so I feel the need to make a nest. And this is my latest manic activity.

It was just an adventure. Reading a map, driving and finding the object of my search. I feel like the great white hunter who brought home the wooley mammouth. My backside will never be the same. I think it was worth it tho. I'll tell you after I eat the chicken tonight.

Billye,

You are going to need a Land Rover....you are really on a mission!

I will break my rule of not posting places to buy things, or endorsing products, only because there are issues as to where to FIND things at all. I don't want any one not to be able to find things. There are other companies. This one doesn't use the Oregon Tilth criteria but the USDA ones, which I DO think are based on the Oregon Tilth ones...This one company, I am familiar with, and agree with their 'transitional' philosophy. It is hard to shut down everything for 3 years if you make your living off of it, in order to be certified organic. It takes a long time to be truly organic.... I do also buy from other companies.

I don't know if you can get these products in your part of the country but there is a retail finder website. These products I like and this coop was at the forefront of the organic movement, way back before it was cool.

http://www.organicvalley.coop/

http://www.organicvalley.coop/store-...rch=4&x=33&y=8

We have producers not far from where I live and they are not mega-cow operations.

Stonefield also makes organic yogurt. Making your own yogurt is super simple but an extra step if you don't feel like making a mess...because messes need cleaning, right? I don't mind messing but the clean up is the pits.

On the grass fed versus feed fed, feed can be OK if it is good feed....grass fed can be an issue if there are deer with chronic wasting disease around...at least that is what the butcher at one chain told me when I bought bison meat. I found that interesting as I thought bison meat was a really safe alternative. I learn something new everyday. I also bought some incredibly good peach juice at Trader Joes. I even found we made nacho chips right here in the state that are basically, just corn..no junk. We have a Whole Foods about 25 miles away, same with Trader Joes. We dont have a Wild Oats anywhere near at all. There are also coops and smaller natural food stores...and more and more chains are carrying brands of organic and natural foods I recognize.

I think if one takes the time to search even local chain grocery stores, one can find, a fair amount of good quality food, but read labels!

In general, I think grass fed beef is a fine bet, and cage free range fed chicken and eggs are nummy. I remember a while back when cow milk actually tasted different at different times of year. I asked a local farmer and he told me when they switched to silage, it tasted different. I remember cows being pastured....you don't see that happen as often, they are in containment now. I remember beef grazing on steeper hillsides....you seldom see that anymore....HMM.

Local farmers may not be certified organic, but, a lot of them, do try to keep their products as free from chemicals as possible. You can always ask, and supporting local farmers helps the healthy food movement. I think it is kinda patriotic in a way. However, you have to accept that only some foods grow here....no kiwis, no bananas....I like those fruits, so, yep I do buy them from the most reliable sources I can find, and grin and bear it.

Congratualtions on your organic safari!!! I suppose that garden is coming next!!

Well, I could not resist going out to watch the astronomical event of the millenium....it was cool, for any one who likes lunar eclipses, it was a good one...a tad cold outside tho.

'Bony lab' is fine, still a bit 'out of it' He just stands and stares at things, and wobbles, but he is fine and his toenails are nice and short....He has been quite mellow........My silver lab, the big guy, appears to be over his tummy ache, and my daughter got tamiflu and is doing a bit better, altho she is not going in for two days, as the flu is contagious for the day before you know you have it, thru the 5th day.

Sue, I hope you do not get this flu, as it is really bad. I keep using alcohol gel...I think if you want to prevent the flu, you stay out of schools and doctor's offices, LOL. (I have to go to the Middle School tomorrow---maybe I should mask, gown and glove:D) Then we have a slew of doctor appointments in the next two weeks---I hope by then the flu incidence goes down, as it is widespread here as it is in MO.

Well, going to take one last look at the lunar eclipse and then try to catch up on that sleep I lost last night. Hope that works for me.

Billye, the next thing I am going to hear is you are off to the feed mill to pick up your order of baby chicks this spring. They come to the feed mill in a box....they are cute for about 2 weeks. Then

Are we all getting

together or falling apart? GEESH!
Billye- I am soo proud of you, I know how hard those first ventures on your own can be? Those truly outside your 'comfort zone'...That is an envelope we all do have to push in whatever ways each of us can do it. YOU HAVE! One special aspect I have always found about home/organic produced foods is that these people really DO have a PRIDE in what they do. It seems to just show in every fiber of their beings... I sort of find it carries thru to their foods as well. That you get quality far above that available thru standard retail is not to be questioned. You will need less to achieve more, because its better overall.

Cyc - Good the big lug was just super woogy? Depending on critters and doses it can take a couple or three days for it ALL to wear off, and out. Coming back at you with a WHA? Happened? kind of altitude.
We've got cloud cover now so will probably miss the whole eclipse thing SIGH!

Sue- I do think we all gotta stay outta the doc's offices that deal with FLU! I go see a surgeon for a f/u tomorrow, but that's NOT like sitting in a GP's office w/heaps of folks coughing or the like.
Anyone shows up coughing and sputtering [aside from me of course-allergies] I am going to not just ask but Demand a mask...

One thing about this series of flu things is that WE really wouldn't like to SHARE! Thank you very much... It was pneumonia that got me to my own auto-immune set of issues...I sure don't want anyone, ANYONE! to enjoy this if it can at all be prevented. Hindsight is wonderful. Ounces, no pounds of prevention are far better than anything else!

Hugs and warm thoughts to one and all! This crazy stuff has got to act sorta normal sometime soon? YES?'s j

Am I dead??!!

I am so paying for these adventures tonight. I even cooked dinner. One beautiful big chicken breast, sauted it with mixed frozen veggies. It wasn't dry like chicken usually is. Very very good. Hope I can find organic sources on my next venture out for some of my veggies. I probably will not be able to move in the morning. But I feel very satisfied with myself tonight. Everything in the vicinity of my rear end hurts!!!! But sometimes I just have to feel like a person again.

Cyclops, glad your bony boy is coming out of it. don't you hate it when our babies go thru these things?

And I'm NOT getting baby chicks. My EX husband gave me a dozen baby geese for my first Mother's Day. I took those things to the pond after they grew up. They followed me back. This happened over and over. There is nothing like 12 adult geese parking themselves on your front porch. Finally I put them in the back of my pick up and they couldn't follow it back. The coyotes finally got them all. It was sad but just nature. Never should have happened in the first place. I don't know what he thought I would do with 12 grown geese.

Sue stay in out of that weather. Everyone stay away from public places.

Silverlady I hope you are feeling ok today. Sounds like an adventure but you should be proud of yourself. You need gps. My mom got it for me when I moved here. It is the best. I have the worst sense of direction.
Sue I hope you don't get sick. Do you have a humidifier? I am thinking of getting one for my eye issue. Get some preservative free drops too.
Hugs to all.
