I don't have a lot of pain but feet feel like I have tight gloves on.
My main problem is numbness and the resulting loss of balance. I fell going to the manacurist. Parked close to the curb, hoisted myself up the curb using the hood of my car. When I straightened up I careened into the window and fell. Para-medics were called. Thank goodness I did'nt break anything. Does anyone know of any treatment for numb feet? I will appreciate any help with this numbness and loss of balance. |

Do you have neuropathy? Have you been tested by a neurologist who specializes
in Peripheral Neuropathy, & neuropathies in general? Treatment for your problem is conditional on the cause or the Dx (diagnosis). Balance problems can be neuropathic or inner ear. If neuropathic, many times OT/PT helps.

JRC - hi - Nide is right - I'd see a neuro if possible right away - if there is numbness in your feet - even without pain - it could be neruopathy.... at this point primarily sensory which doesnt cause much pain at first anyway - but loss of balance and just a constant annoying numb feeling (mine started out like this - numb hands and feet and falling over) - and then progressed from there - a neurologist was able to do nerve conduction studies and immediately could see damage to the nerves that explained the symtoms.....
Be careful - falling is not a good thing... ![]() |

Yes, I have been diagnosed has having PN. I have seen a Neurologist at
UT Southwestern. I am actually pre-diabetic but I developed neuropathy. Do you think there is no treatment for numbness? |

The numbness does not always mean the the nerves or cells are dead, they can repair in some cases once whatever is assaulting them ceases, they have in my case and i was in a prediabetic state as well. I had a lot of numbness under the soles of my feet but not to the point that i ever lost my balance, perhaps if i let the prediabetic state continue the outcome might have been differant. I have numbness of my feet, without pain, but with discomfort. I took a Tai Chi class which helped me considerably with my balance.

I will assume with a fall like that they did a brain MRI, or CT, just in the rare event it was a TIA? TIAs can manifest as numbness. Lots of things can manifest as numbness, and if numbess caused that bad of a fall, you need a good work up, several disciplines.
PN does cause numbess, but so do other things. Get a good 'going over', and soon. |

last year and got a sleep-deprived kind of test at the neuros. Goodness knows I'd have MRI's and nerve conductions out the ears...but in my case, I just keeled over in the house.
I believe they were checking for seizure potentials [I'd avoided all sleep tests prior to this, but had gotten almost all other tests]. OF course nothing came up. It's a good thing that the emt's took a look at you tho. To check for TIA's and other possible cardiac wrinkles. [Went thru that myself too] The only thing I've found that helps with the numbness is physical therapy. Various exercises help the rest of whatever nerves you have left, and your muscles re-program themselves to work with what there is left. Also helps you build up what strength you can to avoid falls in the future. It's not something you stop.....you have to keep at it. IF you ask your docs [hopefully neuro?] for PT to help with the balance, I bet the doc will do a kind of "OH? I forgot about that!" And then write you PT orders...just be sure to ask for a 'home program'! That means the therapists give you exercises and some tools so you can do them at home, and keep it up after the therapy sessions end. Otherwise you do stuff at the PT's and no help for things to do on your own. As one who has had many falls since getting PN, some very serious, I do NOT recommend that! PT and keeping at exercising in any ways possible to keep you moving is far better than the alternatives! - j |
