Default Does having an MRI affect Alan's Stent!!!!

Alan has a Cypher Sirolimus - Elluding Coronary Stent by Cordis.

Alan is to go for an MRI of his back on Monday. A laying down MRI.

Alan just asked me "melody, will this dislodge my stent?" I answered, "no, because it's sewn into your body".

I then told him to phone up the mri place and ask them and they said "no problem". I then went on internet and it says that people with implants, ferro something or other magnetic implants, and stents, well, it can affect the testing procedure.

I then posted the question on google "Will an mri dislodge a stent"., and one of the hits I got was a website explaining all about stents and it said as follows:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"MRI is a diagnostic procedure used for many different conditions. Because of the magnet used in the MRI machine, the presence of metal in or on a patient can affect the quality of the test. If you receive a stent, you may still undergo MRI without damage to your stent. Your physician will most likely suggest that you not undergo an MRI for a month or so after your procedure unless there is an emergency situation."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alan will of course tell them that he has this stent, but my question is why would it be okay to have an mri now and why isn't it okay for a person with a stent to have an mri one month or so after getting the stent.

I mean, the stent is in there one month after, or 10 months after so what's the difference. I'm sure the stent won't become dislodge but will it affect the imaging of his spine?

Thanks to any of my friends on these boards who have stents and got an mri and know the answer. Or any of my knowledge medical people who know the answer anyway.

Much appreciated. Rocky thinks he's going to slide in the MRI machine, his stent is going to become loose, they're going to see it floating in his body and he thinks he's going to have to get another stent.

SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This site says it is ok to have an MRI immediately.

The reason why it was thought best to wait 2 months is that tissue grows over the stent and it becomes part of the body.

Here is a history of stents. http://www.ptca.org/stent.html

Default Well, arent' you a sweetie pie!!

Wow, I absolutely never knew that tissue grows over a stent. I was always picturing the stent where it was holding the artery open like a dam and all the blood just flowing through.

whoever thought tissue grows over a stent.

I shall check out the link you gave me.

Much appreciated.
