Default Muscle Spasms/EMG

I'm having new muscle spasms in a new area. Up until now the muscle spasms other then toe cramps have been confined to the right side of my body. Yesterday they started in my lower left leg/ankle/bottom of foot.

The spasm is pulling my foot down. I try the usual stomp down on your toes to stop it but it will not let go until it is good and ready. This has been really painful for me because that ankle is fused with plates/screws from my car accident and there is little to no range of motion in that ankle. These spasms make it feel like my ankle is going to snap.

I called my GP today to see it there is anything we can do between now and when I see the PN specialist in late November. He wants to see me tomorrow.

My question is...if he rx's something for the spasms....will it interfere with my EMG results in November?

Kelly

I don't think so. I just had an EMG test done on 10/2. I have been on neurontin and amitrypilitine before the test. I asked the technician if my meds would affect the test she said no. However my feet were cold and she said that would affect the test so they put heated thermal pads to warm them up before the test.

You would need to check with your neurologist whether taking something to reduce the spasm would affect your tests. I would think that they would, because by reducing the spasm that would reduce the recording of the over activity in that muscle.

I have developed spasticity in my lower legs which have given me two club feet (equinovarus to be more correct) - when they do the needle emg it shows overactivity in my muscles. I think drugs like baclofen which reduce the spasm would change the tests and either not show up the spasm, or to a reduced degree.

Definitely ask your neurologist about this - you may have to stop taking any meds for spasm around the time of your test.

cheers

Hi all,

Saw my GP yesterday for the spasm and he rx'd flexeril. Going to get the rx filled today. I asked him about the upcoming testing and the muscle relaxant and he did say to stop the meds at least 48 hours prior to the test.

Thanks for all the replies!
