I don't know what kind of problem you had with the Fentanyl patches - they work wonders for me. I started on 1-9-02 at the 50 strength - then to 75 and on to 100 strength on 11-18-02 and my pain went from a 9+ down to 2 to 4. I've been using these patches now for over 6 years and right now am using 125 strength changing them every 48 hours since 4-27-07.

I've had PN for 21 years come December and I'm 76 years old. I will continue using this medication till I die or till something better comes along. I take NOTHING else for PN and I'm getting around pretty good with just a cane and enjoying life and I still drive without incident. I also walk just about every day but I'm down to a mile or so instead of the 10 miles I use to run! But, hey, I'm still verticle!!!

Thanks Dan, the problem I had with Fentanyl (thanks for the correct spelling) is it liked to stop my breathing! The docs said I had an allergic reaction and it began to shut down my breathing and heart rate. Thankfully, my wife saw me very blue and called 911 before she became a widow! 46 is a bit early to be cashing in I think! Especially with a 5 y.o. boy who means everything to me. I have to stick around to finish the 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer we are building together.

I used to take only Neurotin, the neuro doc slowly increasing my dose while the pain, tingling, and electrical shocks became unbearable over time. He added narcotics as it got even worse, not being able to hold a book, hold the steering wheel, shift gears, push in the clutch pedal, and type on a keyboard for work. My current set-up works the best so far, and I'm happy with it. It gets rid of about 70-80% of the pain so far. The pain is spreading rapidly over the last 2-3 months over most of my body, so we'll see what is to come in the days ahead. But at least I can work 5-6 hours a day and help to keep the family fed.

Thanks again for your comment and best of luck with your symptoms as well.

Best regards,

Jay

savannah,
I took Tramadol with Lyrica for a couple of years, but with increased dosages of Tramadol I had trouble breathing, waking up gasping for air. I switched to Methadone 10mg at 8am and 5pm along with 100mg of Lyrica at the same time except take 100mg Lyrica and a baby asprin at 10pm. After a few weeks I noticed my legs weren't getting as tight during the day. Can't take Methadone at nite as it keeps me awake. Another remendy I discovered for constipation is sugerless candy made by Splenda. With Methadone My Lyrica dosage was cut in half.

Tramadol landed me in the ER, back in 2000, the first day I took it, but I suffered for 48 hours with migraine, hot flashes, screwed up digestion, bruxism, vomitting, etc.

Interestingly, I had a dystonic reaction recently to IV Zofran just recently. (IVIG loading dose...headache>>>puking for several days..dehydration>>ER) ER does not know what to do for me, so they give me Zofran. Anticholinergics cause restless leg, so of course, I told them not to give me that....or any SSRIs. Ironically, the ER did no blood tests:confused: and discharged me with a potassium depletion...(It could easily have been put in the IV) I happened to see my GI a few days later and we found out my lytes were off...Big surprise. Had to struggle with dysphagia and those honking huge K+ pills. I chewed them which is OK. Back to the Zofran.....(which is an SSRI, lo and behold) Very safe drug profile tho for most folks.

A dystonic reaction to Zofran is extremely rare I hear. It does not respond to dopamine agonists (tried that)>>>walked the country roads all night (thank God for my patient husband who accompanied me on my writhing walk to nowhere, me, uttering language I did not imagine would ever sprew out of me. My gosh, this sounds more like demonic possession.)

I got two doses of Zofran, that night, was fine in the ER, and was sent home only to later, develop dystonia....no I didn't go back to the ER for them to see, nor to get any more drugs of any type. I looked it up on the internet and found out I am peculiar.

I am fed up with doctors who roll their eyes when you tell them that drug 'x' causes symptom 'y'. After I told my GI I had this, he did the natural thing to do...prescribe the oral. It went down the toilet....for some reason I still keep the Cymbalta that he gave me after 3 tries on it, and 3, 1 week periods of vast illness resembling the Tramadol episode. ("Dr. I can not take SSRIs") It cost $300 for the bottle. I am beginning to hoard meds I will never use? OK, so I have a new issue.

So, yes, some people do well on these drugs, very well. I don't. Darn it.

I am going to call ghost busters. Maybe THEY can help me.

:grouphug:WHOA, I'm sorry to see you have such unhappy medical reactions.:grouphug:
I can understand it somewhat, since I have food allergies.
My allergies are nothing like your's, but I do understand the problem of people not believing me when I say "I can't, I'm allergic".
They do not take it seriously enough!
I'll bet you are seriously worried everytime some Dr prescribes a new medicine for you!
:grouphug:Good luck.:grouphug:

Oh, I just noticed that Splenda item....that sounds more pleasant than the Fleets 3 pack!

And, also, the codone family keeps me up at nite....as does benadryl, chloral hydrate, seconal, and several other dozen meds.....And, once I tried risperdal and ended up waking up, gasping for air, not to mention a heck of a case of restless leg (it depletes dopamine). Sounds like some of us have commonalities. Interesting thing those neurotransmitters.

Many people have nasty reactions to Zofran. This again is another incident of the drug companies not releasing well known nasty problems about the drugs such as Zofran. I learned this from my surgeon who was "Chief of Medicine" when I wanted more Zofran as it was the only thing that kept me from explosive vomiting after surgery. He would not give me more stating there were dangers with this drug. This was in the early 1995!
Another friend was given Zofran in the ER for vomiting and it gave her horrific diarrhea.
With the Tramadol which is generic Ultram I am wondering if the problem is the fillers (made in China) that may be causing neuropathy. Almost all generic drugs are now made in China. There are absolutely NO inspections or quality control on either the manufacturing of these drugs or control over the ingredients used to make these medications. Its quite frightening to think we have no idea what we are ingesting when we consume generic medications.
Many doctors are insisting their patients now stop using generics even with the additional cost.
My neurologist is convinced I must have had a toxin exposure and the only thing I have changed is stop taking the Tranadol. My neuropathy is 80% gone and I no longer need pain medicine after having intractable pain for a year.

I have given up my zolpidem, (Ambien). Interestingly, after many years on the Brand, I was put on generic, and I could not sleep. I got the dose doubled....still no luck. I stopped taking it, and it makes no difference. I could ask for the brand but, at this point, I am going to try to sleep on my own...(that hasn't worked in a decade), OR, use clonazepam. Prior to the outsourcing of everything, I would not care about brand versus generic, but, now I am more concerned.

If the Chinese sickened all those babies on formula with melamine, can you imagine what is in our meds? I am not picking on the Chinese....heck, if there is not enough oversight, this can happen anywhere.

I had no idea Zofran was an issue and it says, 'rare' on every source I looked at. Funny that docs know this stuff, and yet it is stated to be safe. Why is it, when I tell them I have these reactions or even present in the ER, no one cares.

So, makes you really want to go on statins even if your cholesterol is low??? Especially when this study was done by the company that makes Crestor (AstraZenica).
