This was put up on FB for Apr 5th... one of the chicks trying to help Phoebe feed the other? Or trying to steal more food? Or is this a female learning how it is done?

.

Here is a condensed video showing the various fledging attempts. At the end you can see Phoebe encouraging the chick to fly off.

Emma's nest is fostering a 3rd chick...who was orphaned.

Here is the story:

.

So there are THREE chicks in their nest presently.

All three chicks are sitting on the edge of their homemade nest...today. Looking all grown up including the foster one.

They will be flying the coop soon.

Phoebe's nest is have drama too now.

The second egg she had hatched but by accident she picked up the egg shell and also the chick and the chick was deposited outside the nest. The owner found the chick on the cement outside and when the chick seemed to revive he put it back in the nest. But it didn't feed properly. So it is now at a hummer rehab place. I looked today, and only see one chick in the nest, but the FB page says the second chick is eating and eliminating so far. I don't know the full status yet today.

Phoebe's last nest had one chick survive (the other was injured when she disposed of the hatched egg shells and did not survive).

This chick fledged and was named Scout. He is a little male.

Here is a video of him asking Phoebe to feed him and perhaps mate with him or whatever. He is persistent and pokes at her quite a bit.

We haven't seen video quite like this before on any of the other nests that have had cams on the internet. So I am putting it up for its interest value. Phoebe is incubating 2 new eggs right now, and is sitting on them in this video.

Yay

I love named hummingbirds. My parents have them and the dominant male is named Rufus. I love it :)

Phoebe's breeding time is now over until fall, about October or so.

I am therefore removing this stickie... and will start another when she begins again. ;)
