I'm gonna have to smack whomever is running the eagle cam....

I was admiring one of the eagles with the snow in the background and the camera person zoomed out!!!
.

Now I can't see the beautiful bird at all!!!!

Lightbulb Gee...

What cam are you watching?

There is no snow at Norfolk. Their weather has been in the 50's for a while now.

The white you see in the background may be a building roof, or a walkway.
They are also next to an airport.

Since there is little activity now at Norfolk, they turn off the cam, mostly on weekends now. Also they pan around looking at stuff now and then.

What I have noticed is that they put up slide shows, listed on the right side of your screen, showing the most interesting moments of the day.

The Blackwater cam is nice...I've been watching the new hatchlings there
instead.

Default yes...

just saw the male doing his "barking" thing...removing the bark off that main
trunk.

They are building that nest to huge proportions! I wonder if the squirrels
underneath are giving them some stimulus to "build up" ?

The little hatchlings at Blackwater are alone now, and easy to see also.

Wink Creative parents...

At Blackwater...there is a novel construction just appearing in the nest.

One of the eagles put some sticks across the nest edge, and then heaped up
the straw over them, making a TENT...

This wasn't there a hour ago. We just finished dinner and voila...
there is a new thing there! Amazing!

Shocked eaglet fights!

Here is a new video posted from Blackwater...showing the new chicks
fighting! (the mother ends up sitting on them to stop it).

Tomorrow they will be adding this to their blog. I am interested to see what
they make of it.

Default A new EGG!!!

The blog over at Norfolk says there is a new egg:

.

I hope this is true. I did see the eagles last night at dusk worried
about the squirrels...they were watching and listening below the
nest for a LONG time.

And I have been watching the Blackwater babies. They are growing nicely.
The father eagle is not providing food reliably there, so the mother is leaving
the chicks alone alot, but they are surviving. They are starting to crawl around
the nest some. I'd say they are twice the size they were since hatching.

.

Mom is sitting here this morning hoping food will be delivered, but I don't think
it will, and she will have to leave and hunt for the babes!

Default An all niter!! LOL

Wanting to add to this...I checked the Norfolk eagle cam at 10p.m. Eastern Time tonite and saw an empty nest.
Next thing I know I see mama (or perhaps papa can't tell in the dark) come flying in! She appeared to actually be checking and turning the egg with her beak & feet. After a few mins of checking things out, looking left & right it appeared...she nestled down and actually seemed to be warming the egg by spreading out her wings and actually sort of tucking her head down in front of her body into the nest. When she'd raise her head, it was all that appeared visible above the top rim of the nest.
Keeping our fingers crossed that this second time around is a success for them.

Lightbulb they open their wings

like that when it is raining. They might have been having weather.

I watched the Blackwater eagle protect her newly hatched chicks that way
a week or so ago. They "mantle" spread the wings to keep the nest dry as
possible.

Last year in Mid April there was a terrible storm, and this female eagle kept
her chicks dry successfully thruout. The National Geographic eagle nest,
lost their chicks during the same storm. It was too late by then for the eagles
to make a second clutch and they abandoned the nest. Everyone was very upset about that then.

Also I just learned this week, that the eagles walk on their knuckles in the nest..they turn their talons inward so as not to damage the babies or the unhatched eggs. So they appear awkward, as they settle in to incubate.
