I know how difficult that can be with a cat—even with the almighty motivator (food). We've always trained our dogs to sit & wait for meals; it's pretty much mandatory with large dogs who can bowl you over in/with their exuberance—though they'll still bowl you over if you get in the way of their stampede to get to the waiting spot! :D The only downsides thus far are the little puddles of drool... :p
