It sounded extremely traumatic. Poor little bird.

I am just popping online from time to time and I opened up the Cornell site earlier and the person known as Culley / LC (I think?) had just arrived home from Cornell and she was one of the people onsite with the person who caught E3 and she said it only took about 10 seconds. He was on the ground by then. His sex is male she said and he is being hydrated and gets x-rays tomorrow, but she said he didn't have any broken feathers.

She seemed pretty upbeat about recovery.

you take it easy there.

edited to add: Culley said they wouldn't be tagging E3

OK, more updates in Incident Report from Victoria - some sort of shoulder injury. Given painkillers and hydrated for now.

Thanks Lara.

I do have a sensitive streak -- that artist
in me. Sigh. These young hawks are so cute
And vulnerable..it was a very tough day for
E3 and his endless crying difficult for me.

Having watched those eggs being nurtured by those massive parent hawks and then have the babies crack out of eggs and grow so fast and end up with such distinct personalities, I totally understand how you feel.

UtahLefty has posted more on the update site... regarding health care and other things if E3 has a break as suspected or a dislocation. He also said E3 could just be bruised... they'll know tmro.

I'm sorry it's so upsetting, but as I said I do understand.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Thank you, Lara, for posting the link to those updates. Although I haven't posted, I have been keeping up with this thread. Sure hope E3 is okay.

Does the name Utah Lefty ring any bells with anyone here? I wonder what the chances are that she is NevadaLeftie, who is a member here (but hasn't visited in years). If any of you are members of the Cornell website, and are able to chat, maybe you could ask if she ever went by that name? Wouldn't that be a wild coincidence? I'm thinking...maybe remembering...she and her husband used to live in a motor home on the road...

Hi Sparky,
As far as I know UtahLefty is one of the camera operators at Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

I don't use the chat there although from time to time I read it for the information they give out.

I imagine UtahLefty may be on staff considering that they asked for his/her input for the update about E3 and procedures regarding injuries etc..

Karel's Monday morning livestream only just started. E1 and E2 sighted already.

.

Monday almost over for me, but will check back before sleep.

Edited to add: Karel's first livestream is very short.
They're moving from the top of the building to the ground now and I guess will begin again.
They're all exhausted from yesterday.

Someone (keys I think) posted this poem just now. It's really lovely.

The Hawk
Charles Albano
c. 1998

P.P.S. Sparky, Utahlefty is a Vet.

Thanks Lara! I really doubt, now that I think about it, that the 2 Leftys are the same person. She'd have to be in her 80's! Which is not impossible, of course; just unlikely.

Wish I had unlimited data time - I could watch bird cams all day.

I have to take a break from this. I'll follow the written updates on
E3 still from that link, but I can't take the drama anymore.

Some of this cam was just priceless, and unique, and enjoyable though.

And I hope E3 will be all right. One has to be careful when the people there say, "it will be okay", or don't worry. These platitudes just don't work for me and seem dishonest. Everyone said E3 was fine, and I don't think he was from the beginning. He was always small and last fed of the 3.

I think few
of these hawks ever make it to adulthood successfully. They have to survive the manmade stuff they run into, learn to fly, survive the polluted environment (the Norfolk eagles had lead contamination), learn to hunt well, and if all goes as planned, a few may get to mate and reproduce! Then they have to survive migration! Whew!

Sparky, I can't watch it for long myself.
If I open the birdcam from Cornell, it tends to freeze any other window I have open.

I really did enjoy checking on these hawks from time to time and especially when they were in the nest and waiting for them to fledge. The Red Tailed Hawk is a very beautiful bird. It's been a really great experience up until the accident and I guess I find it difficult to understand that the people there didn't think about the danger of the greenhouse roof, and it is a very busy area with building projects going on and traffic rushing by most of the time.

To be honest, I feel a little deflated about the whole nest-on-campus thing now despite how amazing it has been. It probably didn't help that I had also read a blog just a couple of days ago about the fate of last years birds.

My husband's take is that Cornell is just
Going to push for money donations now.
I looked all day yesterday and nothing
On E3. But a new link asking for money
Appeared.

I think this poor bird may be euthanized.
They all ready said he will not be banded.
So they may expect that he is not likely
To survive in the wild.
.

I have problems with the streaming too.
It crashes Flash for me.
