The toy breed requirement stems from hubby's concern that, due to my disabilities, I couldn't handle a big dog if it lurched on a walk, etc... In some ways though, a bigger dog would be easier because I wouldn't have to bend down to tend to it.

You can sometimes adopt retired service dogs, which might be a consideration as well.
I'm a huge fan of my mega lint roller for carpets/ floors. It does a better job picking up hair than any vacuum I've tried.
I was highly allergic to my brother's pit's coat. Depending on how quickly he reacts, you could bring him along for touch tests.
