Heart We fell in love...

Hearts United for Animals in Auburn, Nebraska was amazing. My daughter and I spent the day there yesterday loving up as many animals as we could. I was shocked at the number. Their web site doesn't even have all the animals shown that they really have.

They have a separate facility for those dogs that have recently been rescued from puppy mills or from abusive situations. Until they are ready to be with the rest of the population of animals.

It's hard to think of what to say. The number of animals we saw who were so frightened, scared to death is more like it. Some that you couldn't even get to because they were so ferocious if you came near them they would bare their teeth and growl and bark.

And those that would move forward and look at you with those eyes...please take me looks.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about them. We met the courageous and amazing woman, crippled with arthritis, who founded the organization and talked with her at great length, listened to her stories.

I can't get into all that but I can show you who we absolutelutely fell in love with. Bruna. She was the last of a group of dachsies that were rescued from a horrendous mill in Missouri. All she wanted was to be held. That's all, just held.

Here's my daughter, Bruna and me.

Bruna wanting to be held by one of the volunteer workers.

Those eyes of Bruna's. Sigh. I hope that look changes to one of happiness.

.

LOL this is Nick. He was such a happy boy in comparison. He discovered a bucket of balls and was not going to be satisfied until he pulled every single ball out! lol

.

.

HUA has a lovely acreage all put together with the founder's own money and lots of donations.

.

We met lots and lots of volunteers who keep the place running and went around with one of them. They take the dogs out for walks, clean their cages, etc., etc. When the weather gets nicer they will get to play in the recreation areas outside more often.

I met 3 dogs I absolutely fell in love with. Bruna, Felecity, and Laina. All very sweet dachsies. More pictures of Bruna here.
.
And this is Nick. He was so full of energy and so cute.

Red face I was wondering if you

were going to come home with new "friends"? It would be very difficult not to, at least for me.

Oh Mrs. D, wish I could have come home with a bunch. They have a very strict application process. I have no clue if I can get one as I don't have a fenced in yard. I appealed to their sense of....BUT BUT BUT! LOL!

You have to have personal references and give the name of your vet, which they check out thoroughly. They also do home visits. I told them who I loved, though THAT in itself was hard...There was one pen my daughter was at. I was loving the guys in the next pen. She yelled at me, MOM! There was a doxie named Felecity who was cowering in the back of the cage but when she saw me, she came up to the corner trying to get my attention. She loved me as well as Bruna. SUCH tough decisions!

I would have gladly left with one but they don't operate that way. They want those abandoned and abused animals to go to secure, loving homes.

I need to let my friend "Doxette" (Susan) know of this as she helps with doxie rescues. Maybe she can help find good homes. She's in Canada, but I know her organization networks all over the place with #1 priority being a GOOD home.

Oh Chemar, that would be absolutely awesome! HUA works with a couple of 'inside' breeders who loathe those breeders that are inhumane. These 'insiders' let HUA know when there is a really bad place that is ready to sell off or kill the animals because they don't serve their breeding purposes anymore. The insiders help them rescue the dogs that they can.

They are amazing. They took 4 big vans to New Orleans back during the floods and rescued and helped as many animals as they could.

That would be wonderful if you could ask her to help them. Their contact information is at their web site (in my signature). They had a bunch of doxies. A group of them not yet ready to go into the regular population as they were just rescued. Really beautiful and sweet doxies.

This is the other little lady who wanted me and vice versa. Such a decision. This is Felecity.

That Bruna is adorable! I love all dogs, but dachsiesis are my favorite breed. Did these pets get adopted? Okay, the truth is I have gone ga ga over this breed.
.

I am glad (and grateful) these animals are in good hands and happy.

Vowel Lady, nope, the ones I linked above are not adopted. Bruna has been there for over a year now so I am hoping that HUA will accept that I don't have a fenced in yard. None of my animals go outside unattended anway. Bruna would get to go on lots of car trips and many walks, so I keep my fingers crossed.

Bruna was the last of 42 doxies they saved a year ago December in a Missouri puppy mill. They had to wind into the bluffs into an old dilapidated trailer court with no human beings for miles. Junk piled high everywhere. The dogs all confined in a big shed, the mommies in the cages in the middle, tiny cages. The HUA people had to use wire cutters, hammers and screwdrivers to get them out of the cages.

They have quite a few doxies right now because of a recent rescue in Nebraska. 3 of them were nearly untouchable. We had to go inside their pen to one of the mothers crouching in the corner trying to get away from us. My daughter held her for a long time, and the poor thing was stiff as a board. Even her tail was sticking straight out, rigid. She was so scared.

There are just so many doggies there and some cats too.

Doody:

My fingers and toes are crossed for you. I've also got you and your pups in my prayers.

I hope to hear that you are approved and can take the lovely doxies home with you.

Hugs and Prayers

Me too Farm Wife, it would be nice. And I think one would be plenty right now! Training and such.

Well...I had a home visit over lunch from a local rescuer in Iowa (via HUA).

I think I passed the inspection. She was very nice. I was very nervous and my stomach was just churning as if I were going to take an important exam.
