. OMG you won't believe this! Dh had just now finished filling the birdfeeders and came back inside. I'm sitting here reading the posts. I click on this one and didn't even finish reading herekitty telling about the parakeet when all of a sudden dh starts waving his arms for me to come to the window. On the ground with all the other birds was a bright yellow parakeet! . I am not kidding! I grabbed my camera but he flew away. So now I've got the window shades open and keeping watch. This is too freaky! LOL 2 parakeet sightings in the same day! .

This little bird is so silly - he's been hanging upside down on the bird feeder!!
. I went out onto the back porch and he flew to the fence railing but flew away when I reached my hand out to him. He perched himself in a sweet gum tree and watched me. He seems sort of tame - and he's very comical. He's definitely persistent because the sparrows are allowing him to be on the bird feeder at the same time they are. It's cute to watch them interact.

The picture is a bit small Suzqz, but it looks like you have a yellow budgie there. More than likely it's escaped from some-one's cage.

I'm going to buy an inexpensive cage today while I am out and see if he will get into it. It's pretty rainy here today - and while I'm glad it's not cold I hate the thought of him outside in all the elements.
He's such a silly little bird - I think he must have been someone's pet and got a lot of attention. If I'm able to catch him my son and I decided to name him RiffRaff. It seems to fit his personality!! .

I think some parakeets escape at pet shops.
The big Meijer's near us has several flying around the store and cheeping. They have been there loose for weeks now. They seem to hover in the rafters near the entry door. Sparrows also get IN the store as well, since they nest near the entry. The big stores tend to have uneducated help(pet handling education), and I think the birds escape these employees easily. If you have time.... you can try to hand train him. This technique is used for outdoor birds, like chickadees. You have to sit in one spot, and not move and let him get used to you. Then you put food near you on a table or whatever, and don't flinch when he comes to it. Then you put some in your hand or on your knee, and sit very still and the bird will eventually come to you. I have only done this with chickadees...but if this parakeet has been a pet he may train to you more quickly. But you have to be there for a while to earn the trust.

OK - I finally got a small cage this morning and put some birdseed and a little mirror inside of it. I set it on the patio with the cage door open. Hopefully he will get inside. None of the birds are out there now - they probably see the cage and think it's a trap!!

Well, the little parakeet has ignored the cage since Friday. The little female cardinal caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and was very curious. She didn't try to get in but stuck her head right up to the door. It was so cute. We had rain today so I brought the cage in. I think the little parakeet is enjoying his freedom - I hear him singing quite often and he just landed below the bird feeder to share dinner with a dove!!
