Hi All,

I have suspected PN for the last two months or so. Symptoms are not severe, but occur on a regular basis in the evenings/nighttime(tingling, pins and needles, sharp random shooting pains).

Brief medical history. I have hypothyroidism and taking 0.05 levothyroxine for the last 5-6 years.

In 2016 was diagnoted with gout and take 200mg allopurinol daily for hyperurecimia. Can allopurinol cause neuropathy? I saw some google articles on it.

I am taking the folowing supplements on a daily basis
1) R - Alpha Lipoic Acid (600mg/day)
2) Dr's Best Benfotiamine (600mg/day)
3) Milk Thistle (500mg/day)
4) Methyl B12 (1000 mcg/day)
5) Curcumin (500mg/day)

Anything to add to the list/subtract from the list?

PS : Since levothyroxine interferes with other meds /vitamin , particulalrly R-ALA , i take it four hours before/after any other vits /meds.

Thanks and much appreciated

Hi,

You might try fish oil:

Frontiers | Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementation Accelerates Nerve Regeneration and Prevents Neuropathic Pain Behavior in Mice | Pharmacology

You will might also be interested in reading the thread on Resveratrol in the main forum for PN.

Resveratrol

I have been taking both fish oil and resveratrol for three months, unfortunately to no noticeable effect.

Default Omega 3

Thanks ..

fish oil is obviously good because of its high omega 3 content. Does Omega 3 fortified eggs also server the same purpose, as I am allergic to certain kinds of fish?

Oily fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel and herrings are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Default newbie dosage question

Hi Folks

I have Suspected PN for about a couple of months. I have a neurologist appointment next month. Meanwhile , I am combating my neuropathy with the following supplements:

R- Alpha Lipoic Acid (300mg X 2 times daily)
Benfotiamine B1 (300mg x 2 times a day)
Methylcobalamine B12 (1000mcg daily)

I also take the following prescription meds : allopurinol 200mg/daily for gout/uric acid and levothyroxine 0.05 mg for hypothyroidism.

To this I have added acetyl l-carnitine (1000mg/daily) to the mix. The symptoms seem to have improved a little bit lately, but I am concerned about my dosing and possible interaction between levothyroxine and acetyl l-carnitine.

Any comments /advise please??

Thanks

What about acetyl l-carnitine? I tried it for a couple of days , but gave me really bad insomnia, so I discontinued it. Plus it interacts with the levothyroxine I am taking. I read somewhere that R-ALA is not as effective without acetyl l-carnitinie. Is that true?

This is complicated.

Some clinical trials suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine as a supplement can help in management of neuropathic pain (Acetyl-L-carnitine in painful peripheral neuropathy: a systematic review).

I can't think of any reason why the effectiveness of R-ALA taken as a supplement should depend on the availability of acetyl-L-carnitine.

Default l-Methylfolate

Thanks Kiwi

I have made the following changes to my regime: removed curcumin and milk thistle, added Omega 3 (1200g) and Acetyl L- Carnitine .

I also heard about L-Methylfolate . Any inputs on that ? What is the recommended dosage? I read from some of Mrs D's old posts that high doses of L-Methylfolate are linked to colon cancer risk.

1) R - Alpha Lipoic Acid (600mg/day)
2) Dr's Best Benfotiamine (600mg/day)
3) Omega 3 fish oil (1200mg/day)
4) Methyl B12 (1000 mcg/day)
5) Acetyl L- Carnitine (1000mg/day)
