A nutty question
It's about nuts AND it's probably a dumb question, but...
When you buy mixed nuts in the store, Planters for example, they're roasted, right? How do raw nuts taste in comparison? Brazil nuts, for example, and almonds. I don't want to order a truckload and we don't like them because we're used to the "bad" kind! |
Almonds are good natural.
I think natural cashews are odd. I think most brazil nuts are raw... hard to roast in that shell. The problem with Planter's is that they are salted. Keep nuts in the frig to keep from going rancid if you by natural. |
Thank you! I think I'll order Brazil nuts and almonds. They seem to get the highest marks for health benefits.

I eat raw almonds and walnuts. Walnuts are a great source of Omega-3s.
Since I have started eating these nuts raw I don't like the taste of roasted and/or salted nuts. |
How long do raw nuts stay "fresh" in the refrigerator? I don't want to order too many, but they're way cheaper in truckloads.

Nuts contain a lot of oil and can become rancid if not stored properly. Storing them properly, however, is easy. When stored in a container in the refrigerator or freezer, nuts may stay fresh enough to eat for as long as 2 years. |
3oz of unsalted almonds provide 270mg of magnesium.
This is a huge benefit. Other nuts are high also... Check this website: www.nutritiondata.com pay attention to serving size to get the most accurate information. nuts are high in protein too... but also fat. Sometimes I have just nuts for lunch. Nothing else. |
My new "thing" with walnuts is to put them in oatmeal. I'll put about 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, 1/2 cup fresh blueberries and about 1 tablespoon honey in a bowl of oatmeal......YUM!

We like walnuts in our oatmeal also, but we prefer VERMONT MAPLE SYRUP to honey. :D (We like honey, also)

My doc just advised me to eat nuts as a snack. The exception is peanuts, which is a legume. Interestingly, peanuts (other than one or two) always tended to give me headaches.
She also told me to eat my nuts raw. Not sure why (would love to know and will ask her next visit). I DO know that there is a study (perhaps more than one) that showed that folks who eat raw nuts several times a week tend to not have issues with overweight. Since I have been on the food plan she suggested, which is similar to this new paleo diet (there are several books out on the market), I have lost weight. I would hesitate to buy the mixed nuts unless it specified "raw," or you could look up the product on line to see what you could find. I think Whole Foods tends to only sell raw nuts (not 100% positive on this though). You could always buy two or three different ones and mix them in a baggie. Good luck! Feel well!!! |
