Just not sure

I'm not very good at this, but here it goes. I'm 38 years old and thought I was in OK shape until my hair started falling out, not to much at first until I noticed a nice size bald spot on top of my head. I made a Dr. appt. they took blood tests and results came back that my white blood cell count was off. but everthing else was normal. could an infection cause my hair to fall out? I now have three more bald spots on the back of my head. My Dr. doesn't seem to be to concerned.

Hi Victoria

You've hit upon a great site - very friendly and knowledgeable.

As you probably know, hair loss may be due to a raft of conditions, including stress, fungal infections, autoimmunity and hormonal imbalances.

Although your doctor is not concerned, he has not quite done his job if he has left you without any clear impression as to why he is not concerned and the likely progression and outcome. I would suggest going back to him to advise of your continuing symptoms and to request clarification as to the likely cause etc. If you don't feel happy with his explanations, you might request a referral / second opinion.

You will see from the various posts on this site that in the end we all have to be fairly proactive to get the best out of our doctors.

Take care.

Merle

Thank you Merle, I have indeed made another appt. If she is as cold to me as she was the first visit. And my answers still go unanswered I will seek a second oppion. Thank you again.

Hi Victoria and welcome! I think one of our members, Doody, might know something about this. I'll pm her.

Hi (((Victoria))). I'm no expert on hair loss! Just have had a couple of experiences with a friend and my son-in-law losing their hair. They both were diagnosed with alopecia areata.

My son-in-law was really devastated. I know at the time he was also under extreme stress and am convinced that was causative. He had a good doctor who started treatment with cortisone injections. However, I strongly recommended he start on a regular regimen with Nioxin hair products. But the person I sent him too was very knowledgeable about Nioxin. I LOVE the stuff!

My best friend went just the Nioxin route. Her hair grew back in time (think a lot of those cases do anyway), but to this day she uses Nioxin products and nothing else AND her hair isn't as thin as it used to be.

I am shocked at your doctor's reaction to all this. Shame!!!

I have no clue what the reason for your hair loss is, but here is a link to info on alopecia. http://www.naaf.org/aa_typealopeciaareata2.html

And this is about Nioxin - my favorite hair product, used it for years and years on end. (And I think only available at hair salons.) Nioxin for hair

Good luck! Hair loss is no fun. Just take hope that it will grow back AND that you are still the same wonderful person on the inside.

(Of course, these are only my suggestions from my own experience.) :)

Thanks, I will definitely look at the alopecia areata site. My sister who is a nurse actually said the same thing last night. WOW!! As for the hair product,
I am using NUTRI-OX, My husband bought it for me. But I will look into getting NIOXIN. I hear wigs are in style. LOL

Doody 11-11-2008 11:33 AM

:D ((Victoria)) I have a feeling your personality will see you through this. And thank goodness for your sister's knowlege! I'm just not so sure about that doctor...just ticks me off.
