Mestinon

Has anyone here taken this medication? It is a drug used to treat Myesthenia Gravis but it was prescribed to help my autonomic neuropathy.

Well, the side effects are awful... :vomit2:

It is severely upsetting my already fragile GI tract. Stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea... you name it... I only took half the dosage (with food) as advised by the neuro. The thought of a higher dosage scares the hell out of me.

This drug is used for myasthenia gravis, and is a acetylcholine agonist. It will increase your GI actions. I warned you of this when you mentioned it before.

I don't understand why your doctor gave it you? With your history, etc. What is it supposed to accomplish for you?

Mere 03-03-2010 04:56 PM

He said it may squelch the symptoms of my autonomic dysfunction...

mrsD 03-03-2010 05:29 PM

Well... it is pretty strong, and your reaction is quite typical.

There is one poster on MG forum who uses the liquid form.
That way you can accomplish lower doses. 60mg/5ml.

1ml = 12mg

However, this drug just might not be for you. Report this to the doctor, he may agree.

Thanks MrsD... I think I agree...I remember you mentioning that it causes gastric upset. I had no idea it would be this bad - with one dose of 40 mg. I can be a bit of a lightweight with meds.

At least I gave it a try...

Mestinon was the first drug I was ever on for PN. It was before I had my skin biopsy. It didn't do much but make me kinda sick and weird feeling....then again, every one is different. After I got my skin biopsy back, they put me on IVIG....(which I had my first reaction to this time--I'm fine, but I had some odd things.)

Anyway, one can always try the Mestinon...

Yes, Cyclelops, he wanted me to try it before the IVIG. I will definitely pass on this one...

Are you okay? I missed your sense of humor...

never take any medication

until you have checked all the side effects on your computer. The doctors can not remember the side effects of all the drugs they prescribe.

Last month i had an operation and a script for antibodies. I checked it on my computer and it said do not take if you are taking Morphine. I have been on Morphine for 5 years and it was on my chart. It said it could cause severe abdominal pain or possibls DEATH.

10 years ago i took ZOCOR for cholestrol and i got Neuropathy. It even said it on the box. Doctor did not tell me. Since then i do my own checking.

Mere, I am OK, I guess. I have a newborn here in the house, (he was quiet for a week, no more!) and my kitchen is torn up, and my contractor broke his ankle....life gets complex at times! I have been attempting to make soap....and ordering seeds for the garden. I just have my humor in a 'dust proof' box. The real fun this week came during kitchen demo when hubby nicked a pipe! No water for a day, and of course, the Old Faithful in the kitchen was hydrating to say the least. It was like a comedy scene from a movie. Hubby was at the helm of the Sawzall, not me...I knew better.

Alas. Why I do these things is beyond me.

Mere 03-04-2010 01:26 PM

Was it like the episode of three stooges when they are plumbers? Sorry, not funny, I am sure. What a mess... Hope things get cleared-up soon.

Happy soap making... sounds fun!

Well the electrician was here, and I got a new contractor....sheesh. I have yet to ask him what he will charge me....at this point I barely care.

Yes, it was just like the three stooges....(we probably even look like them...I am Moe, hubby is the chubby guy...was that Curly? Then there was Larry...my daughter can be him.) Well, we had quite the time in the basement looking for the main water turn off, while the kitchen was being sprayed. Of course, it ruined a batch of curing soap. My labradors were soaked. The dehumidifier is running now in the basement. It is all dry already, since it is so dry in our house in the winter.

Today, the table with the microwave on it (our temporary kitchen) collapsed....on my toe. #$%^& It's fine, really.

I am sitting the rest of the day and cooing at baby.

JoanB 03-05-2010 09:10 AM

When you first told us about this, the image that came to my mind was Lucy and Ethel. Maybe if the water spout had been aimed at the soap and created walls of bubbles...

But seriously, sorry things haven't gone so well for you, cy.

cyclelops 03-05-2010 10:09 AM

Oh Joan, this IS well! In C's life....this is considered smooth.

Mere 03-05-2010 10:27 AM

All of this and a baby? You are Superwoman!

Mere

cyclelops 03-05-2010 11:03 AM

Nah, I am so overwhelmed it all rolls off my back.

Next year, when I have the baby for the full year my daughter is deployed....then you can call me superwoman....Lord, I hope I live that long, lol.

Never at the age of 57, would I imagine being the 'mom' to a small baby!!

Mere 03-06-2010 09:47 AM

Sounds like a difficult but incredible experience. One that will probably have more positives than negatives...
