This is getting ridiculous!

I go to check my e-mail and I get this message: "This action cannot be
completed because the other program is busy." I go to other websites
and I get the same message.

There's just one little problem: I'm not running any other programs!!

Don't the people who send out this crap have anything better to do?!
I suppose it could have something to do with the popups I'm getting
(you remember, the "adult sites" that I'm not visiting:rolleyes: ) I guess I'll
just have to put my popup blocker back up to 100%. Of course, that also
also means that I'll probably be missing some legitimate popups from sites
that I visit.

I wish somebody would lock these idiots up for life!

Okay, rant's over...for now!

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 08:56 AM

I had that same issue!

I downloaded and ran CWShredder, Spybot and adaware and problem solved!!!

I run them all regularly now. You can google the names and they're all freeware and recommended. When I was having a problem, the "computer geeks" site recommended that these all be downloaded then ran on my computer in that order.

Also, my puter ran so much faster and cleaner. :)

Good luck!

Hi Braindrain,

PopUps are the Worst.
I use SpyBot, the one that Kimmy mentioned.
I don't know the other ones she mentioned, but I think her combination must be good because I still get some and she doesn't get any... :)

Here's my favorite infuriating-computer smilie...

http://health-boundaries-bite.com/im...ieComputer.gif

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 11:12 AM

Oh, yeah. When I ran the three of those in the order that I stated, I shut down and came back and NOTHING. It was awesome. I didn't know alot about computers and pop-up's had become something I expected and thought they were just a part of online life...lol.

I hope y'all try them and let me know. :)

KD

ConsiderThis 09-17-2006 11:19 AM

So do you not get spyware anymore, either? No more slowing down of your computer?????

It seems complicated to go and get all three... but you don't think it's complicated?

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 11:25 AM

Considerthis,

I know next to nothing about computers...trust me...lol.

I was told that computergeeks.com had really good information and was a great site. I went there and read the suggestion that I mentioned above.

I was desperate and thought I'd try it (I really didn't have much expectation). I was shocked...really.

They're quick, easy, safe downloads....one checks for coolwebsearch, one spyware and one adware. I ran all three and cleared the items it tagged and was literally amazed.

Of course, I don't do alot of surfing anymore and don't go to the music share sites anymore either (notorius for yuck), but they cleaned me right up.

If I do do alot of surfing, I'll run them right after. Otherwise I run them once a week/two weeks and keep my pop-up protection to medium.

Yes, they were so worth it for me. You'll be amazed at what they find...really.

KD

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 11:32 AM

CW shredder http://www.softpedia.com/get/Interne...Shredder.shtml

spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Adaware SE: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

There are some links for the freeware.

I want to mention also that the computer tech for the company I worked for first recommended adaware to me and used it regularly.

Braindrain 09-17-2006 12:27 PM

I'm going to SCREAM!!!

I've tried 3 times to follow kimmydawn's directions. I clicked on the
first link and went to the site to download the program and got this
message:

This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.
Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the
problem.
************************************************** ******
There was no "other program" running!! It was a d--n popup!!

Now, I have to wait until my blood pressure goes down before I try
again. It could be a long wait...

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 12:31 PM

Gina,

I'm so sorry. Have you tried to do "ctrl, alt, del" to show your task manager to see what else might be running?

First, have you cleaned your temporary internet files, or tried a "clean disc"?

Also, what browser are you using? Have you tried to access any sites with an alternate internet browser if you have one?

Lastly, do you have virus protection? If so, have you recently ran it to make sure there's no virus there?

Have you looked in your add/remove programs to see if something was installed through a visited site that you can delete from there?

These are the first things I would try at this point...remembering that I have only basic knowledge.

Feel better and try these things as you can.

Braindrain 09-17-2006 12:54 PM

kimmy...

It's not your fault, and I'm not mad at you.:) I'm angry at all these
people who make it necessary for us to have to go to these sites in
the first place. Don't they have better things to do with their time
and energy than create spyware, viruses, etc.?

I don't drive and I don't get out much, so the computer is my way of
connecting to the outside world. It really makes me angry when people
try to interfere with that. (Including my ISP!)

The people who do these things should ask themselves: what would
they do if they found out that they or a family member had a fatal
illness? How would they feel? It's not so much of a thrill then, I'll bet!

I'm using IE 6. We have the Verizon browser (our ISP), but I never use
it. Mainly because it's a bit screwed up and I don't know why. If you
look at the top of whatever browser your using, you'll see the name of
the site-in this case, Brain Talk-and right under that, the File, Edit, ect.
buttons. When I use the Verizon Yahoo browser, those buttons are
hidden under the toolbar. I have no idea why and I can't figure out
how to get it down. If I could figure it out, I'd use that browser instead.

I haven't cleared the temp internet files in a while, so I'll try that next.

Thanks for listening.:)

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 01:02 PM

You're very welcome, Gina.

Let me know when you've cleaned your files, and then maybe try to access the links with your verizon browser? It's a place to start. :)

KD

Braindrain 09-17-2006 01:33 PM

The temp internet files are gone and I'm getting ready to switch browsers
(hope it works). Something I forgot: where is the add/remove programs
button? I haven't had this PC that long and there are still some things I
don't know how to find.:o

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 01:37 PM

Let me know what happens there...

The add/remove is in your control panel. Click the start button and you should be able to access the control panel from there. I wouldn't remove anything that I was sure should be there, but more do a search on things to suspect to find out what they might be. We might not need to do that yet, though :)

What system are you running (i.e. windows XP)?

Oh, that gives me a really clear picture...

I think I can do that...

I have a hard time doing lots of different things, if I just do one thing, then I feel much more comfortable because I don't get the unsettling confused feeling.

Meaning that right now I better try to paint two shelves.

I can't get the whole thing in mind at once, the idea of what I have to do to get ready and then actually paint, so it makes me nervous... so I feel like I don't want to do it, when really I do....

:)

Thanks for the help. It will make it much easier to do!!!!!

Braindrain 09-17-2006 01:55 PM

Windows XP

Okay, I've got the add/remove programs screen up and it looks like all
the programs on it are supposed to be there:

programs that came with the computer

a couple that I know I downloaded

programs that are connected to our ISP

Windows 2000 Hotfix (I'm assuming they're updates to XP?)

What's next?:)

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 01:57 PM

were you able to access the websites I listed thru the verizon browser?

KD

Braindrain 09-17-2006 02:12 PM

I clicked on the first link, since you said to do them in that order and
got a "this page cannot be displayed" message. I'm not sure if the
problem is with the site or the Verizon browser.

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 02:14 PM

Ugh. OK. Hmmm.

Have you ran your virus scan on the computer to check for any viruses?

But first, did you "ctrl, alt, del" to see what the task manager shows might be running?

Error when accessing sites: Server busy ... the other program is busy ... choose 'Switch To' to activate
Issue

When attempting to create a new site or edit an existing site, Dreamweaver fails with the following error:

Server Busy

This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem.

buttons: [Switch To...] [Retry] [Cancel] (grayed out)

Note: This TechNote only applies to Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000 Pro users who have Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed.
Reason

When sites are defined or edited, Dreamweaver checks to see if a local web server is available. If the local web server is not properly configured, Dreamweaver can fail with this error.

ZoneAlarm or similar applications can contribute to this issue. If the web server or any of its dependent services attempt to start before ZoneAlarm when booting the workstation, the web server may not run properly.

To determine if the local web server configuration is causing the issue, view the Services manager:

1. Choose Start button > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services (Windows XP and 2000) to open the Services manager.
2. Locate the World Wide Web Publishing Service (usually at the bottom of the list) and view the Status category of the service.

The status for the service should be "Started". If you find that the status for the World Wide Web Publishing Service is "Starting", this may indicate that the service has not fully initialized. (Ref. 60060)

Solution

Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service and all of its dependent components. The service can be restarted through the Services manager:

1. Open the Services manager and locate and select the World Wide Web Publishing Service.
2. To restart the service choose Action > Restart, or right click the service and choose Restart.

Should the Service Manager produce an error or the service fails to restart, manually invoke the iisreset.exe:

1. Choose Start button > Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open field to open the command line interface.
3. Navigate to the WINNT\System32 folder by typing "cd winnt\system32" at the C:\> prompt. The System32 folder can be located on the system root drive (usually C:).
4. Type "iisreset" (no quotes) and press the enter key to restart the service.

For additional information about this issue, please see Problems with ZoneAlarm and IIS on the IISFAQ.com site.

Also,

Is the computer still under warranty? They might be able to pinpoint exactly what's going on and walk you right through it quickly...

If it's not, we'll do what we can do. :)

KD

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 02:36 PM

Possibly it's a firewall issue from what I'm reading so far, and those confuse me to death. I'm still reading...

you might also try your system restore { start/accessories/system tools}

especially if you can come close to a date when it started acting up??

save any special files to make sure you don't lose anything.

I used sys restore a couple of times when i had some major problems {lost some info} and it brought me back to where I could find the info again.
But puter had other problems{viruses}and Hrdrive eventually croaked

also use the Disk Cleanup tool if you haven't done that yet.

Mozzilla Firefox or the new Netscape 8 or 8.1? seem to be better browsers than IE.
the new Netscape has built in security features.
free to download @ mozzilla.com and netscape.com {look for download section}

you might look at trying the new linux operating systems {less viruses}
look at some of the older threads -named duel boot {should be dual boot}, linux ubuntu, ect.
You can get them quick in a Linux computer magazine $10. bucks or so
just put in the CD or DVD??make sure you get the right kind for your computers player.
you can "test" drive em by running from the CD/DVD player.
only prob I have now is the wireless connection- so use a wire until that's figured out.
or win XP why it's called dual booting- choose at boot up to use the Linux OS or windows OS.
one on sys restore too

Hi, Jo:) I'd be happy to use the Verizon browser if I could just get the
buttons to show up at the top of the screen.:( I still can't figure out
why it's doing that.

I did a system restore early on when I'd only had my computer a few days, and it weirded out a lot of things...

So I'm a little leary of them now....

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 02:50 PM

I found this (a few times actually with ppl getting the same thing you are. it sounds simple and worth trying. i'm still investigating. i found other information regarding malware, trojans, etc. but this seems easier to start with and i found a few sites with this same issue and resolve):

My collegue didn't user her computer for a week, and when she turned it on yesterday everything was fine EXCEPT Internet Explorer 6 is working extraordinarily slow, especially when it comes to opening pop-up windows.

She's checked in Firefox and the same sites work fine so it's definitely an IE problem. Also she's tested the broadband and LAN connections and they are fine.

Last night I scanned uin Nortons AntiVirus 2004, Spybot Search & Destory, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Microsoft Anti-Spyware, and nothing came up (except for a few cookies in Ad-Aware, which I quarantined).

I also checked at WindowsUpdate and the computer is all up to date.

The Opera browser and Netscape are also fine. Does anyone know why IE would be running so slowly?

So far as I can tell my collegue doesn't have any unusual plugins or anything istalled.

Can anyone help?

Found the solution (after a few hours of trial and error!)...

In Internet Explorer, go:

Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-ons...

Look for an add-on called "req.dat", select it and then choose "Disable" below.

Click OK then OK again, then restart Internet Explorer.

I don't know what req.dat is (its Type is listed as "Browser Helper Object), I just found it was this one through a process of trial and error.

I'm not young enough to know everything.

Jomar 09-17-2006 02:54 PM

I might have missed something,
can you list what you are using ?

Win XP? home or Pro?
what browser for internet MS IE, Firefox, netscape ect?
Verizon ?? DSL ? wire or wireless? do they have there own browser??

I use verizon DSL with a wireless set up but I don't remember a browser- unless it asked and I said no.
or are you at the verizon /yahoo webpage or the verizon/msn webpage?
any ad ware/virus/or spyware running at this time? what kind?

sorry about the 20 ??
but it helps me get it clear in my brain.

kimmydawn 09-17-2006 02:55 PM

I would run my virus scan first because most of the sites I visited with this issue is due to malware & trojans.

If it finds nothing, then it could be a conflict somewhere...

Can you do that first and let us know?

KD

Braindrain 09-17-2006 03:03 PM

I clicked on Tools > Internet Options > Programs > ...but there was nothing
that said Manage Add-ons.

I'm using Windows XP Pro (even though it's a home computer)

The Verizon is DSL and it's the Verizon Yahoo browser.

Jomar 09-17-2006 03:04 PM

for the verizon browser does the whole thing seem to be too big for your screen?
maybe try display settings in control panel -
control panel/display/settings
try a smaller size /less pixels?? just to see if that helps?

or does your monitor have adjustments buttons on the front - maybe try those for smaller or adjust side to side /top to bottom??

Is the verizon browser the only one you have?

does internet explorer not work either?

on that [I clicked on Tools > Internet Options > Programs > ...but there was nothing
that said Manage Add-ons.]
it's down towards the bottom a button took me a minute to find it - but no "req.dat" on mine. but mine works fine when I use it {rarely} except it doesn't like the mcafee security programs very much {have to start IE twice before it loads}

Braindrain 09-17-2006 04:56 PM

One down, one to go!

Okay, I finally got the Yahoo browser toolbar to show up. Apparently,
there's a feature on here (which I found by accident, BTW) where you
can "hide the toolbars". Which is ridiculous, if you ask me.

As for the rest of it, I'm going to ask my SIL to take a look at the PC.
It's just hard to know what the problem might be without actually
looking at the computer screen, y'know?:o

Thanks, everybody!:)

Junie 09-17-2006 05:38 PM

The very best anti spyware I have used is the beta version of microsoft anti spyware and now its called windows defender..and you can go to the windows update site and put its name in a search on the site and its free, all you have to do is first download the windows validation tool (to prove you have legal copy of windows) and its free! I sure wish I had installed it on mine in time since somone hacked my pc and took over my yahoo Id's and I can't get them back!!! Grrrrrrr.....I hate computers!

Braindrain 09-17-2006 05:57 PM

Sorry to hear that your IDs were stolen.:( I'll take a look at the site,
thanks, Junie!:)
