Downton Abbey

Has this already aired in the USA?

It's only just started here in Australia. It is absolutely delicious.

Makes me wish I had studied set design instead of what I did study. So beautifully set and filmed.

Tonight's quote for me was... "We all have parts to play Matthew, and we all must be allowed to play them". Maybe it's the English in me. Loving it.

Lara 03-30-2012 07:12 AM

wow, no one else love this show? New season starts again in Australia soon. Beautifully made. Loved it and can't wait for more.

mrsD 03-30-2012 07:13 AM

Yes, we have this on PBS stations here. It is also offered OnDemand with some cable.

We watched some of this season, on a recommendation of a friend.

It IS very very good. Very realistic and good scripts etc. The acting is also very professional and elegant. A very satisfying view IMO.

Shirley MacLaine is going to be on next season... they are filming it
already, and news items are coming out now about it.

Lara 03-30-2012 07:20 AM

Shirley MacLaine? My heroine. In old England?

I'm not so sure about the acting and all the rest so far but I have an eye for period decoration and costuming. I wish I'd followed my dreams in that direction early in my life.

mrsD 04-02-2012 07:53 AM

Here is a collection of "Maggie" moments... I do like this character and she does her soooo well:

Lara 04-02-2012 05:41 PM

Thanks for posting that. She's quite wonderful! :D

I'm starting to think that the character Shirley Maclaine plays may be the Aunt/Great Aunt in the USA. Just guessing of course. Maybe Mary does go abroad and stay with her.

They're replaying the first series here as a catch up so the 2nd series must begin soon. I look forward to it. Hope it's not on too late though.

Koala77 04-02-2012 09:11 PM

I love the show too Lara but with Series 2 about to start in Australia, we're going to have to wait to see Shirley MacLaine because she doesn't join the cast until Series 3.

Quote:

... set during the Roaring Twenties. The series will open in 1920 and cover eighteen months.......
Academy Award-winning American actress Shirley MacLaine will join the cast as Martha Levinson, Cora's mother.....
Wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downton_Abbey#Main_cast

From what I can work out, series 2 covers the war years and ends with a Christmas special. They may even be a wedding on the horizon :D

Lara 04-03-2012 03:57 AM

ahhh, so we're a little behind as usual. lol

Thanks for letting me know that Koala.

Haven't loaded the site yet, but I wonder if the wedding is between two of the staff?

I see Scotland opted out of viewing it at first and aired Taggart instead. LOL [really laughing out loud!]

Not that I don't enjoy Taggart myself, but they're like chalk and cheese really. Good to read that they're going to show it afterall.

Lots to look forward to in the future. Some of the critiques suggest that it's not going to be as good as the first series, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it anyway.

 thanks

P.S. Hey, I just noticed we're back in the same timezone.

Alffe 04-03-2012 07:07 AM

Ok now you all have me curious. I haven't watched it but my younger sister does and raves about it. I need to go back and start at number 1. :D

My favorite show, SMASH wasn't on last night due to big four basketball...have to see if it's on the computer this morning. Sounds like I'll be sitting on here a long time. *grin

Koala77 04-03-2012 07:14 AM

Here you go Alffe....... 2 short trailers to give you a taste. :D

I just became a member of Acorn TV so that I can watch this stuff at home. I watch Doc Martin and LOVE IT! I will start on the downtown Abby one next.

Lara 04-03-2012 03:23 PM

You do need to watch it from the beginning.

[I'm a fan of Doc Martin as well.]

Lara 04-06-2012 06:04 AM

Well, they're showing Gosford Park tonight on the tellie.

Both Gosford Park and Downton Abbey were written by Julian Fellowes. I didn't know that until tonight. I can see the similarities.

I remember the first time I watched Gosford Park thinking how gorgeous Ryan Phillippe was. :o

Sadly Gosford Park doesn't finish until way too late for me tonight, so I'll to have to wait for another day to see it.

I notice they've been advertising the new series of Doc Martin too Lara, but I don't know when it starts.

Alffe 10-29-2012 06:03 AM

Can't wait for season 3 to begin. Love this show!! My girls bought me both seasons 1 and 2 so I'm all caught up.

And btw....if anyone is interested...http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread178364.html

Doc Martin & Downton abbey are great. The third series ends on Sunday & Im gutted. They usually do a Christmas special though.
I am hoping there will be another series of Doc Martin too.:)

I'm thoroughly enjoying Downton Abbey. Watching or reading anything about Great Britain, especially during both World Wars is fascinating for me. I'm so glad you're getting a chance to see this fabulous program.

when are they going to start a new season? I love that show but getting tierd of reruns:hug::hug:

Koala77 11-29-2012 01:05 AM

We in Australia are about to start season 3 with Shirley Maclaine, but I think you have already seen that series.

I heard recently that the actors have only recently been signed to do a fourth season, so I guess that means you could have to wait a while. Sorry. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2178225.html

We've been waiting patiently for ever so long for series 3 to begin. :(

I believe DA will air on PBS starting the first week of January 2013.

Rrae 12-01-2012 10:31 AM

I'm just now finding out about this wonderful series! I've watched the 'Downton Abbey Revisited' to try and get familiar with the characters before watching season 3, but I'd rather see the first 2 seasons before seeing the new episodes.
Where can I find the re-runs? (I'm too cheap to buy the dvd's :o)
I have DirectTV and the only option that comes up when I do a VOD search is the 'Revisited' show.

I guess I could strongly hint to my family that the DVD's would make a great Christmas gift if I can't find the re-runs. :D

First episode of season 3....last night, and thankfully it is on
our OnDemand too!

It is so nice to have it back. I love the kitchen scenes and also
the nifty cars. Shirley sure did arrive in style! LOL

Maggie has some wonderful lines in this episode too!;)

Alffe 01-07-2013 03:06 PM

I howled at Maggie!!! That is the latest I've stayed up in a year and tonight, Notre Dame plays Alabama so I'll be up again. Hope I go to bed happy!! :grouphug:

mrsD 01-07-2013 04:01 PM

I didn't see many of the first season, and only half of the second.

But it seems that this Earl...whatever his name is, acts like such a wuss. He does things, and what he did to ruin is eldest daughter's attempts at her "romance" was just foolish...and of course he relents, just like he relented with the youngest who ran off with the chauffeur! Was he always like this? Boy-- the fancy men sure do disappoint on this show! The acting is good but the characters are ppppffffftttttt....

katmae 01-07-2013 07:35 PM

season 3

I'm so glad that it is finaly on been waighting all summer it looks like it's going to be a good season:D

Thanks for this, Chemar! I never woulda known this!

NO WONDER I wasn't able to auto-record (Tevo) this show! I was searching my TV for 'Downton Abbey', when in fact it is titled under "Masterpiece Classics" on PBS.
Ok, so NOW I'm in the game! :D

Oh thanks for this! I tried to search for Downton Abbey and was shocked that it wasn't in any listing...I'll go search for Masterpiece Classics as soon as I can get a chance at the TV. I watched all of season 1 on Netflix, got hooked, bought season 2 from Amazon Instant Video and now I need to get caught up on season 3 LOL

mrsD 01-13-2013 10:36 AM

Tonight will be episode 2 on PBS for Downton Abbey.

Yes, I'm hoping I can find a repeat of epi. 1, and then have it set to record each new one. And of course I forgot as soon as I left the computer, going to bust in on the boys' Wii time and check the listings right now...

Chemar 01-13-2013 07:25 PM

The 2 hr episode 1 of season 3 is on PBS now. (started at 7pm eastern)
Episode 2 starts at 9 pm eastern

mrsD 01-14-2013 08:23 AM

Episode 2 was really good! The music reminds me of the sound track for the movie The Piano....everytime that piano comes on I think of it! LOL

Arrgghh...got the season premier, and episode 2 was set to record. But it only recorded the first 2 minutes...so other than the ad for the cruise line, I got nothing! There's a repeat on the 15th, so hopefully it won't malfunction.

DawnD 01-15-2013 10:23 AM

Its really hard to not post a spoiler alert...But I will say I did enjoy the Christmas Special :)

BetsyAnn 01-16-2013 07:30 PM

Finally caught up!

Rrae 01-22-2013 09:21 PM

Question....

Since I'm at the caBOOSE end of this wonderful series and don't really know much since I haven't seen season 1 or 2 (yet).....can anyone tell me why the one maid's husband (?) is in prison??

Thanx

Koala77 01-22-2013 10:12 PM

He's been accused of murdering his first wife Rae.
