How are your headaches doing?

How are your headaches doing?

I have been having more lately that last for a couple of days at a time. Nothing cuts them.

Must be time to see the Dr. and get a new Rx.

So, how is your little head doing?

Hi Taffy, no takers?
I did some volunteer work on Wednesday and it turned out to be a bad head day after that. Thursday was fine, then Friday-crashed and burned. Sore head for 12 hours that nothing would shift. Been fair since then, but can feel it lurking.
Saw my pain man today and booked in for a steroid injection in 3 weeks.
Have decided to up my medication as I have been a bit reluctant to take them for low grade pain, but it just builds up and I wander around not able to do anything. So from now I will take bigger doses and see if that makes me able to do things.

Hey Taffy, I think it might be time for you to see the doc. Maybe up your dose of Topamax???

A friend of mine just recommended a book to me called Heal your Headaches. He has been a migraine sufferer like me most of his life and has tried everything with no luck.

I am going to go check out this book and see what it's all about. ;)

Peter B 02-12-2008 05:44 AM

i can't believe this. Now 7pm and haven't needed any medication at all so far. What is going on? Usually I would have had 5-6 pills by now. Really weird.
The only thing different is that I took a Valerian tablet last night.
Of course, feeling better I will now overdo it and have a crash.

Funny you should ask about migraines. :Thats-Funneh:

It used to be that when I started a flare, I would have 20-30 days of non-stop migraines which would send me running for solumedrol.

I started my first flare since starting (then stoppping, then restarting...but that's for a different thread) Topamax. I'm only taking 50mg in the AM and 50 mg in the PM.

I had one migraine about 1.5 months ago that ended in the Urgent care with shots of demerol, toredol and phenergan. When I woke up the next day it was gone (not how my head aches usually work).

The last week and a half, I've been getting migraines, but not every day, and the've been managable (also not how my headaches usually work) with not much vomiting.

So, in general, I'd say that the Topamax is making a positive difference in regards to my headaches during flares. But I'm interested in increasing the dosage in hopes that it will do even better next time?

I know how bad this can be. Medications don't seem to have any effect.
Have you tried muscle relaxants? I really think that this is the key as there is so much inflammation that muscle tension builds, and pain relievers don't stop that happening. You can get over-the-counter muscle relaxants. Take a strong dose, along with a pain killer, and lie down so that your muscles can start to relax.
When i get this one it lasts all day because I am still doing things (very little, then back to bed). if at night, I bomb myself out so that I sleep and let the body relax.
so I think it is a lot of muscle tension that is causing the pain that won't go.

A few more of my brain cells have logged on, so I just realised that you have what I call "the bear-trap." Once it gets you, it won't let go.
I get one or two a month, with no identifiable trigger.
How well are you sleeping?
When was the last time you had a good, refreshing sleep? Can't remember?
There is a vicious cycle with pain, and one of the most unrecognised is muscle tension. I tend to get very tense in the neck and shoulders, and so the slightest extra stress puts me over the top.
I'm just starting to realise (pain affects the thinking ability) how much my neck and head pains are made worse by this factor.
I'm now taking bigger doses of muscle relaxant at night, as sleep is so important in getting back on top of things.
I was always trying to take nothing or just minimal amounts, but that didn't work.
See if you can get an upper body massage when it has eased off a bit.
You can also do shoulder and neck massages yourself, to just defuse the trigger points.
I'm going to try to remember to do these little massages everyday to stop the muscle tension getting too high.
Daily activities along with constant pain as going to give you huge stress, and you will store this as muscle tension.
Hope this helps.

Well I went to the doctor today and I am off work for the rest of the week. THey did another infusion to break my headache they used depacon, toredol and fluids I feel a little better. She also put me on depakot and some muscle relaxers. Well lets hope this works for me.

bhaag 03-04-2008 02:03 PM

Thanks for the info!! Yeah I dont sleep that good she gave me lunesta to help me sleep as well. I hope this all works!!! I feel like a walking pharmacy...... I will keep you posted!

tovaxin_lab_rat 03-05-2008 12:03 PM

Before I finally got on the right dose of Topamax for my migraines, I too felt like a walking pharmacy. I had migraines so bad, I ended up in the ER at least twice a month on IVs to get rid of them. They knew me on a first name basis! Now, that's bad!

You should really talk to your doc about a preventative for your headaches and not something to take after the fact. Or see if you can find out what causes them....I don't know your history, but I went through every kind of testing there was to try and find out what causes mine. And I tried everything...having 2 or more migraines a week was just no long acceptable.

Good luck with your new meds!

bhaag 03-05-2008 02:52 PM

I have tried the preventatives. Topomax, nuerontin, lyrica and now I am trying depokot. I hear ya about the not acceptable part! I have them every day!!!!!!

tovaxin_lab_rat 04-02-2008 07:42 PM
