Got a bad bug

I started feeling bad last Wednesday. We had been in Lexington for the weekend and my 2 year old grandaughter had a cold so maybe I caught something from her. She did a lot of coughting and two year olds don't do a good job of covering their mouth. Plus I held her little hand a lot so I would have gotten the germs anyway.

Anyway, it started out with just the sniffles, I brushed it off as maybe one of my numerous sinus infections. Then came the bad coughing. The cough isn't in my lungs at all. But it is a hard cough and sometimes sounds like a lot of congestion in my upper airway. I didn't start running a temp until Friday night. My temp is normal during the day but by bedtime it si 100.5. I am just drained from all the coughing. My throat, head and upper back hurt from all the coughing. I called my doc on Friday and got started on an antibiotic and got some cough syrup. I don't know about you folks but I have never found a cough syrup that works well. So I will call him again first thing tomorrow.

I hope you feel better soon, Doydie. Glad you got to hold that little hand, even if it was germy, lol! :p

DM 03-09-2009 09:57 AM

AWWW Doyd~ that stinks! My DH is fighting a cold/sinus infection right now too and he says it feels like his head is as big as a beach ball. I measured it and he exagerated!
*grin*

Hope you feel better soon and of course, rest and plenty of fluids, b/c it sounds suspiciously like bronchitis. {{{{DOYD}}}}

DD is taking GS, Johnny, to Docs today...he has cough and fever. Must be going around.

Feel Better soon, ((((((Doydie))))))

Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling that well Doydie - I really hope you feel better soon and i'm thinking about you!!

I haven't been feeling too well either. We just got back off vacation and I always seem to get the cold when we got back after a trip somewhere because of the change in temperatures etc so it sounds like you've got the same thing as me!!

I'm sending you many gentle hugs and please call your doctor if you don't feel any better!

I hope you start to feel better soon. Being sick sucks.

Jappy 03-09-2009 06:54 PM

Feel better doydie. With the constant change of weather I am
surpised there are not more with colds.

I hope that I make it through. Those little bugs travel around
fast.

Take care and drink plenty of fluids.

Jappy

My Doctors office has a nurse practioner and you can get in to see her pretty quick. So I called early this moring and had an appointment in one hour!!!!! So yes, as you all think it is Bronchitis. With the wheezing I have in my upper airways she even eluded that it moght be asthmatis bronchitis. So she gave me a sample inhaler. She asked me whether my cough medicine was helping (Phergan with codiene). I told her it was like taking water. So she had the Doctor sign a prescription for Tussinex. That medicine can knock you down! It has the same medicine that's in Lortab, Hydrococone. She said 'now this will make you sleepy'. I went home, used the inhaler, took a dose of the cough medicine and slept for 2 1/2 hours. It wasn't until about 10 hours later that I didn't feel loopy anymore! So I think I will take it only at bedtime and just use cough drops and the other cough medicine during the day.

I don't know if any of you all are an expert on antibiotics but she said that Vibramycin doesn't peak for 72 hours so I really wouldn't have felt better over the weekend.

I must say that I feel a little better tonight, no temp and not as much urge to cough. Thanks for all the well wishes. Now if I can just get one of you to come over and do my dishes that are piling up.

Twinkletoes 03-10-2009 12:35 AM

Glad you went and got some good meds. I hope you feel better very soon!

Leave the dishes for later -- they'll wait for ya! :p

Calling the doctor again tomorrow morning. Basically am a lot better I just can't stop the cough. I get to wheezing and I just can't stop it. I have never done any wheezing.

DM 03-12-2009 08:34 AM

Yikes Doyd!!! Yes, do call the Dr and please let us know what they say. You may need a different cough med. Those bronchitis croups can be murder. I had bronchitis last yr and once I'd start to cough, I couldn't quit. Take care.

Sending healing hugs your way.

doydie 03-12-2009 10:48 PM

When I woke up this morning I didn't feel as bad. The longer the day goes by and the more talking I do the worse I cough. So of course I had taklked to anyone at all during the day so I didn't call the doctor. So i will call him tomorrow

doydie 03-13-2009 11:09 PM

I gave up and called the doctor this morning. When I wake up I am generally feeling pretty good. But I used my good cardiac stethescope and listened to my lung sounds in front. I must admit that I'm not really sure I can still call myself a nurse anymore since I have forgot so many things but I do know what a good lung sound is and what one sounds like when it's not good. And mine landed in the second category. So I went and got a chest xray and he started my on Cortisone. Oh, I hate to take that stuff. It tastes so bad. Chocolate very quickly removd that from my mouth though! I won't get the result of the chest xray until Monday. I could shoot myself for not calling yesterday!

ali12 03-14-2009 07:03 AM

I hope the Cortisone works for you Doydie and that you feel better real soon! I have never had the Cortisone before but I have heard that it tastes horrible - you have the perect excuse now to eat chocolate though if anyone complains!!!:D

I hope the Chest X-Ray results come back clear as you don't need any more problems to deal with!!

Thinking about you and sending many gentle hugs your way. Please let us know when you hear anything else!!

doydie 03-14-2009 11:03 PM

Lung sounds are clear today!!!!!!! This morning I had an occasional cough but that's all it was. But as the day has gone by I have done more coughing. Anxious for Monday to come and see what the chest xray showed. I don't like it that the nurse practioner alluded to asthma. I don't want another problem :(

DM 03-15-2009 12:49 PM

Hey Doyd! Hope this means that your'e on the mend. I tend to do the same thing, wait another day to see if I start to feel better. Then, I end up saying the same thing you did. Why didn't I call the Dr earlier?? Hope the chest Xray is ok and that you feel better w/each passing day.

doydie 03-15-2009 10:34 PM

Grrrrrrrrr, I'm so mad. I decreased my cortisone dose today and I've been wheezing and coughing all day. I do not want to have a dx of asthma!

Twinkletoes 03-16-2009 12:02 AM

Aaaaaackkkk! Sorry for your wheezing. That's no fun at all.

Let us know what the doc says. (((Doydie)))

NurseNancy 03-16-2009 07:11 PM

IF that's the case i'd ask for an immediate referral to a pulmonologist.
it's always best to get another opinion.
and, there might be something they can do to settle down your lungs.

have they considered some type of short term inhaler to cut the irritation?
i don't know why you have to wait so long for just an ordinary chest x-ray.
they can develop those films in 30" and have it read.

doydie 03-16-2009 10:37 PM

Doc gave me a sample of Symbicort. I took the first dose a little while ago. I have a very long term problem with sinus infections. I always have drainage. I can't remeber if sinus infections are aerobic or anaerobic but my ENT doc many years ago told me that I have the kind that is the opposite that it should be. Both my girls do to. When they were living at home we would all get a sinus infection at the same time. So I got a script for that antibiotic. I also have a script for a sinuis xray. I also got a rescue inhaler. I have seen severe asthma attacks and I am no where near needing a rescue inhaler but it was a sample also. She also wrote a script for a nebulizer. I don't know if I'll do that or not. She said next week we'll have to think about a pulmonary function test if this doesn't work. Oh, she also told me to take Claritin.

As for the cehest xray, I got it done about 4:30 on a Friday afternoon just as my doctors office was closing for the weekend.
