Yellowjacket bite; oh sooo painful...

I've been stung other times during my life and it stung...

But this pain is off the charts. Is this because of the MS? Could the stinger hit a nerve?

I've used vinegar and baking soda, StingEze Analgesic w/benzocaine 5% & phenol 1.35%. Finally took a pain pill that just took the edge off the pain allowing me to type with pain; got stung on a side of my hand.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I saw the mosquito thread...

And no, the stinger is not left in. What is going on?!?

Koala77 07-25-2008 10:05 PM

Sorry for my ignorance, but what's a Yellowjacket? Is it a bee or a wasp type insect?

0357 07-25-2008 10:08 PM

Very aggressive wasp...

Koala77 07-25-2008 10:30 PM

Thank you.

Here's some common treatments for other wasp stings. Maybe one might work for you.

* Ice applications
* Make a paste of Baking Soda and water and spread over sting
* Meat Tenderizer....Make a paste with a few drops of water to a teaspoon of meat tenderizer and quickly apply to the sting (this can reduce the pain and inflammation)
* Ammonia Solution--Apply a 1-2% percent solution, three or four times daily.
* Oral Antihistamines
* Topical Steroids (Cortaid, Dermolate, Lanacort, etc.)

If you have a severe reaction then medical intervention will probably be necessary.

Koala77

Thanks for this information. I am not having an allergic reaction that needs medical attention; problems breathing, etc.

I did try ice packs, baking soda and water paste, and an oral antihistamine; forgot to mention...

Feel silly for posting for the pain is finally letting up a bit. I've just never been stung before and had such pain. Wondered if anyone else had this problem who had MS.

Again, Thanks for your information!

weegot5kiz 07-25-2008 11:16 PM

i dont know about MS but i too as a mail man have been bit by bees and no problem but yellow jackets are nasty and do hurt

Twinkletoes 07-25-2008 11:29 PM

Owweee!!!

I don't know if it was yellowjackets, but my dad got stung yesterday a few times on his hand and once on his nose. (They weren't honeybees).

We applied mud a couple of times on his hand, and it never did swell up. When I called later to ask him about it, he'd forgotten about it, so it worked for him.

BUT, he doesn't have MS -- I do.

I don't know if its supposed to be worse for MSers, or if you just got some really nasty stings.

Sorry about that!

weegot5kiz 07-26-2008 12:11 AM

0357 someone on here started a thread a bout mosiquto bites an most of us all said same thing they are worse then normal and much more irritating, so maybe the ms is a cause of this..i do hope it gets to feeling better real soon

Twink i stepped on a yellow jacket nest one day and got 9 bites my arm swelled up so badly i had to go to ER, glad dad is doing fine Twink, and mud is the best, used it on my kids too

ewizabeth 07-26-2008 12:16 AM

I stepped on one once and the pain was unbelievably bad. I hope you'll feel better soon.

0357 07-26-2008 01:12 AM

Thanks everyone for your well wishes! The pain is now manageable.

weegot5kiz, I was wondering the same about the mosquito post and this having anything to do with one another. Mosquito bites have too never bothered me they way they do this year.

Again, thanks!

Kitty 07-26-2008 06:17 AM

I was stung multiple times (about 30) when I stepped in a hive about 10 years ago. I had no idea that they lived in the ground!! I'm not sure if they were yellowjackets or just regular bees but the pain was unbelievable!

We were cutting grass and I stopped my mower over one of their nests and I guess they didn't appreciate it....next thing I knew my legs were covered with them. Scared my DH to death!

Now, I pay attention to what's on the ground as well as what's flying around!

SallyC 07-26-2008 10:06 AM

I shouldn't have read this before going to bed last night. I had nightmares.. Yellowjackets are the meanest little buggers in the bee/wasp family..

They will be anywhere they can build a hole....in the ground or in the house. We had to call the exterminators out more than once..... They built a hole around our patio and another time in the pipes of our chain link fence gate.

I'm a bee-a-phobic..

I'm glad you're better..

SandyC 07-26-2008 10:14 AM

I am very allergic to these wasps. Some people think they are bees because they are so small. I carry a needle kit in case I am stung. I was told by an ER doc that I am between a person who swells excessively and/or dies. I am not sure about dying from them as I'll probably hyperventilate and die first. Thanks Doc! They scare the #@!# out of me.

My grandma would say soaking down some tobacco with saliva and applying to the sting is the best. ;)

Taffy 07-26-2008 10:18 AM

I'm sorry. YJ stings are painful and yours sound really bad!

GladysD 07-26-2008 06:39 PM

Sorry to hear about your painful experience! Hope you are feeling better!!!

weegot5kiz 07-27-2008 12:53 AM

yeah the tobacco one i have heard but not tried, mud works, as does ammonia, Kelly that was a yellow jackets nest thats were they nest, and if you step on it, they come a runnin, i always watch where i walk, been bit too many times glad im not like sandy or our one son, thats got to be a bit scary,

hope the bites are feeling better, my grams use to make a aspirin paste and apply it afterward to help the swelling and pain or discomfort, sorry i ddint think of that last night

dmplaura 07-27-2008 08:25 AM

You poor thing! Bees, wasps, hornets, they all hurt!

I was last stung as a child on the bottom of my foot. Since that time I've been lucky and avoided them successfully.

The big fluffy bees never bothered me (I think they're kind of cute!) and they're not aggressive, unless you disturb their homes! I had an infestation of black jackets in my rotted back porch last summer and had to hire a pro to remove them. Couldn't go near the area for 2 days at his recommendation until they were indeed dead.

Yes, they are not the friendly little honey bees, but rather angry little wasps, to be avoided big time..

Thanks Sandy..:)

Me too.:(

Dejibo 07-27-2008 03:47 PM

did you get the stinger out???!!! if the stinger stays in it keeps on stinging!

The baking soda, and mud stuff as they dry pull the poison out and sometimes the stinger.

Drag a credit card across it to flick the stinger out. many say DONT squeeze with tweezers as it will release more poison from the stinger, but dang, as long as you get the sucker OUT!

hope you feel better.

0357 07-27-2008 08:43 PM

Dejibo

I believe the stinger is out. My hand is very swollen today (taking Allegra every 12 hours) and my hand itches.

Thanks for this tip and your concern! Take care.

oldsteve 07-29-2008 03:55 AM

I've never been stung by a yellow-jacket but my kids were pestered by a bunch in the past. Probably from walking too near their nest and upsetting them. They never got stung either.

Did ya know that yellow-jackets really like fried chicken? We used to sit on the front porch after frying up some chicken and eat it. It was like somebody rang a dinner bell! Yellow-jackets came from all around and would land right on the chicken.

I've only been stung by regular honeybees and the baking soda and water paste always worked for me. Well, once I was stung really bad by wasps. I was visiting my great aunt in Missouri and it was in the fall. The wasps would back their rear ends up to the crack under the front door for the warmth. I went out in sock feet to get the paper and stepped on all of them! OUCH! I lifted up each foot and had a wasp hanging from each toe. Not really fun.

Judy2 07-30-2008 06:05 PM

Owwwwww and more Owwwwwwww!!!!! Yellow jackets are the worst!!!! Sure hope you're feeling better by now, it usually takes a few days to get rid of the pain (as if we don't have enough all ready).

As long as we're exchanging bee sting stories..... Summer before last I struggled to get out on my wooden deck off the bedroom to water some plants. Little did I know that wasps/yellowjackets (?) had built a nest under the deck and when some water landed on their house....YIKES.....I could only slide my feet backwards an inch or so at a time and meanwhile I got stung three times on my eyelid right at the lashline, and twice on the inside of my arm. My ex was a beekeeper for awhile and I remember him saying they go for your eyes as they see the movement. So I'm shuffling backward, trying to get my old dog in the house so she doesn't get stung, feeling them stinging me and trying to keep my eyes almost closed. Couldn't even swat at them since I have to hold onto something for dear life with no balance. The meat tenderizer paste took away some of the sting.

Last summer I didn't go out there at all!!! This year had a small ramp made so I can go out in my "chair" and whenever anyone is here, I ask them to check under the deck with wasp spray in hand!! Also bought a couple of those old-fashioned glass bee catchers that you put something sweet in. The stingers crawl in through a hole in the bottom and can't figure out how to get back out!

Kelly -- About lawnmowers and bees of any kind -- from my beekeeper ex. They don't like the big WHOOSH of air that comes out plus of course stepping on the nest didn't help either!! I used to mow our grass all the time. On one occasion I went around the house once, must have been in the flight lane for those "cute" honeybees, and one stung me in the head. After recuperating from that one, went around again ----- another sting!!! That was it!!! I left the lawn mower right where it was and told my ex he's mowing until those bee hives are outa here!!!!!

They attacked our black German Shepherd too, probably thinking he was a bear. Poor guy, had to take him to the vet for shots.

I'm definitely afraid of anything with a stinger!! MS or not -- IT HURTS! Oh, by the way, eventually my ex became allergic to the bee stings and had an anaphalactic shock reaction starting. Needless to say, the bees were sold quickly!!!

Guess that's one good thing about winter!!!

Take care.............:)

DM 07-30-2008 06:44 PM

OUCH! Sorry I'm late at seeing this thread, but I'm w/Sal; probably going to have nightmares about bees tonight. Yellow Jackets are mean and when they sting ya, they make a horrendous buzzing noise.

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

How's your hand today??

SallyC 07-30-2008 06:52 PM

Ewwwwww.....Shudder....Ewwwww....I'm shaking all over from your tale, Judy..

megveg 07-30-2008 07:15 PM

I saw this thread and had to update, I was stung by a yellow jacket about 2 hours ago in the TEMPLE. it hurt SO badly but luckily it was close to the time i had to take my xanax, so i got the stinger out, iced it and then the xanax chilled me out and now it doesnt hurt but i have a huge bump now like i got bitten by 6 misquitoes in one spot.

im glad youre feeling better tho! :)

0357 07-31-2008 01:58 AM

Judy, that sounds so painful! Thanks for sharing...

DM, the swelling is almost down and it still slightly itches yet... Thanks for asking. Too, we just found the hive in the ground and they have been sprayed :) Our child got bit four times while mowing the grass and later that day I got bit once while looking for the hive.

megveg, OUCH!! Oh my, that sounds so painful :(
