SSDI Quality Review?

Today I called SSDI to get an update on my husbands SSDI case. SSA told me a decision has been made but his case was randomly picked for Quality review.

Two weeks ago my husbands case worker seemed to be hinting that in her opinion he may win this case, now its in quality review until late May 2011!!

Has anybody here had this happen to them? If so what was the outcome? Does my husband have to start over with SSDI mental exams and more?

The stress!!!

Hoosier_Daddy 03-14-2011 11:28 PM

Yes this happened to me in 2008. 6 weeks after they told me about the review I won my case. Not sure if everybody wins but in my case I did. Hope you win!!

Thanks for the response. I dont have a good feeling with this Quality review thing, they said his name was pulled random, i say it has to do with age.

How old is he?

untilthebell 03-15-2011 12:41 PM

42 with seizures 3-4 times a week, he had a brain tumor. After surgery he was left with a seizure disorder. He also suffers from depression and reactive arthritis.

He is getting close to that age (50s) when SS really doesn't press the age issue as much. Early 40s is possible. But my hunch it was a random pic. What's not clear to me is what are they reviewing? Was he approved, then gone to review? Or are they reviewing whether he should have applied or not? It seems to me that is what judges are for. I have heard of cases that were approved then reviewed by another board.

untilthebell 03-16-2011 10:55 AM

He was aproved then 1 day later his SSDI info/case went to the SSDI Quality review board. They said its a 60 day investigation. I googled it a bit but still have no clue exactly why this happened.

I believe I've read before that these random checks do happen after a positive judgement has been made. I'll wager your husband will pass through this review. If not, appeal with representation and contact your congressman.

Same exact thing happened to me about a year ago and I also got this guy at the SSA to cough up some info that they are really not supposed to reveal. About a week later I logged into my online banking and saw a hefty deposit from the government. I was finally approved!

untilthebell 03-16-2011 02:21 PM

Thanks for the response! Any info helps. Very interesting, because I called SSA about 4-5 times in the past week and one guy did say my husband was approved but his case/claim is now under -SSDI Quality review, but then when i called the next day SSA said they cannot tell if he was denied or approved. So what scares me is that he was approved and they are reviewwing his case! They started looking at his info on March 4th 2010, I get worried more & more each day. I was hoping to hear news by today, nothing yet.

Are you saying his case has been in review since May 4th? Or is that the date he applied?

untilthebell 03-17-2011 10:03 AM

He originally applied for SSDI back in Oct 2010, he won his case and a day later- March 4th 2011 is when is went to the Quality Review board. Sorry If i wrote may, I'm so tired, stressed and depressed over here. One sec we feel he won, the very next day- in quality review!

SSDI and stress

I am sorry you are dealing with SSDI, so am I. I was changed without notice from DCF to SSDI. No reason or explaination even with a phone conference. I have found that even with an attorney, you don't always get the answers. I do not think you will have to go through the whole process again. Hopefully, the review will go just fine. I know about the stress too. Please visit the social security forum, that has a few of us on there who are really having a devil of a time with the acencies in volved such as SS, DCF, SSDI, medicade and medicare. We are all going nuts trying to figue out what they are doing. Both don, and legal mania are trying to help on that thread. take care, ginnie

When my case was under review I was asking the same questions that you are. Over and over I was told about a little known secret about the quality review board. Not only do they review approvals more often than denials, but the chances of an approval being overturned by the review board were very slim. Keep us informed and may the luck of the Irish be with you and your husband. :)

Jimking 03-17-2011 01:19 PM

untilthebell, did your husband receive any moneys at all, a monthly check or medicare benefit card?

untilthebell 03-17-2011 01:26 PM

No. We found out thru calling the 800 ssa # that he was approved, but seconds later the ssa phone representative said- oh your husbands case is now in Quality Review board. We didnt receive anything. Some websites say that its 50/50 now, we could be denied! Which is horrible! SSA only seems to investigate approvals thru the quality review, not the denials from what im hearing.

Scary! Stressful and unreal!!

untilthebell, I understand what you are going through. My wife is very ill and it took nearly 4 years for her approval. She finally saw a judge last Nov. and was approved on the spot. She was also awarded 3.5 years back pay. She has received her monthly check and medicare but its been months with no luck on the retro pay. It could be that SS is stalling or perhaps slowing down the process of paying out social security insurance payments, finding every excuse in the book. I hope not and pray that your husband and yourself will find peace soon. The stress can be overwhelming.

for the latest year i could find on the ssa site, 2007 ,the quality review rate of finding error in a decision was 3%. so whoever is telling you 50-50 is unreliable.

Hoosier_Daddy 03-17-2011 03:18 PM

I know this may not help but whe I won in 2008. I had a lawyer from Allsup and he has been doing this for many many years. And he told me that in all of this time if the case went to a review that NONE of his cases had been overturned. He told me they just cross the t's and dot the i's to make sure everything was done correctly. Try not to worry yourself to death. I do this myself. 1 of my many illnesses. I know when I do it it makes me feel terrible. It will all work out in the end.

untilthebell 03-17-2011 06:14 PM

Thanks again everybody. But If they started reveiwing hsi case March 4th of this month, wouldnt they have contacted us or made a decison by now? I feel the longer they research the more likely they will deny his case. Today is March 17th, I dont know. I really hope this works out.

The odd thing is I guess these -SSDI Quality Review cases are rare? It doesnt seem many responded to my post considering this is the disability forum.

echoes long ago 03-17-2011 08:22 PM

my case went to a quality review, i forget how long it took but it wasnt that long. they are backlogged even more now. just because they got it on a certain date doesnt mean they started working on it on that date. everyone wants smaller government, well this is what happens when the government gets smaller. i answered you about the % of cases that quality review overturned, its 3 % approximately.

untilthebell 03-18-2011 09:56 AM

Echoes, was that years ago? Does anybody know, the longer they take the more likely for being denied?

it was 2005

Mine went thru the quality control. It took an additional 2 weeks. I received my backpay a week later, before i even got my approval letter. Then my monthly check came. It all went pretty smoothly. Good luck to you!

SSDI Quality Review

Thank you. Was your case recent? Or years ago? I'm just worried because we have 2 young children to raise, no family who can help and about close to broke! Also I'm scared because we are now on week 3 of my husbans SSDI Quality Review. I thought they would have been finsihed by now, I called them late Friday and all they say is expect to hear back in May 2011.

I won my case in October of 2010.

Day 16 of my husbands SSDI Quality review and SSA still says they are investigating his case.unreal! Stress!!!

finz 03-28-2011 11:30 PM

I feel your frustration Until ! Hang in there !

blacklion727 05-02-2011 11:48 AM

Hi, I am in review as well since April 13th. Wondering how long it took for your case? Have you heard anything from them? When i called today I was told that I should hear something this week. I have an anxiety disorder so this waiting is killing me slowly.

untilthebell 05-03-2011 01:21 AM

Hang in there! Its a super stressful battle when dealing with SSA and ones health. We were told that we will have a answer in late May to early June.

Best of luck

blacklion727 05-16-2011 11:51 AM

Just wanted to give you an update. I spoke to SSA this morning and was told I was approved but they are waiting on data from another agency so they can finalize. It's my guess that they are waiting on info about the workers comp settlement I got years ago so they can calculate my payment. I hope you hear something soon. I was told to give them 2 or 3 more weeks.

thechosenone 06-02-2011 01:46 PM

Congrats on your approval!!!!
I just heard today that a decision was made yeaterday and it went to quality review! So im on pins and needles like you were! I hope the outcome is favorable.

Have you received a decision as of yet? I don't think its due to age because the same thing has happened to me and I'm 35 and all they keep saying is to wait

What is the quality review? Is it before you are awarded SSDI bebefits or after you had been awarded for a few years.

ballerina 08-18-2011 12:20 PM

Last week my SSDI examiner told me one visit to my PCP was missing from my application. I had submitted over 600 pages of medical records. She told me if I could get a copy of that record to call her and she would supply me with a barcode so that I could fax the record to her. Today I called to get the barcode and I was told that a decision has been made and that a physician had already reviewed the decision of the examiner and that my case might go to Quality Review.

I was confused and asked her if she had received the missing record from the doctor. She indicated that she had not but that she didn't need it to make her decision. The examiner was not allowed to tell me her decision.

I am still confused. If my case goes to Quality Review how long does it take? If it does not go to quality review does that mean that I have probably been denied?

Feedback would very much be appreciated to lower my anxiety level.

Thanks!

untilthebell 08-25-2011 02:14 PM

Actually its my husband. But they now gave us a Sept 2011 date. They-SSA have said due to his age 42 they need to look into a few things( whatever that means) and we will get a decision by mid Sept. I hope!!!
